I believe the s14 was the "loophole" that allowed the car to be approved for wrc. Makes sense he would swap to 24v for the baja where that wasn't a requirement.

I'm pretty sure WRC requires all engines to be 2.0L displacement max, so italian spec S14 ftw i suppose.

There is a article out there somewhere that covers the initial build and talks about how the S14 was the key to being able to enter the 20+ year old car. Something about the S14 being an approved engine back in the day or something.
