Fark, I was in the shop, on the phone, ordering parts and saw a pickup truck start to teeter forward, I dropped the phone, jumped up and hung on the rear corner of the bed screaming until one of the techs dropped the lift.

Disaster Averted.

I did however watch a customer drive her car into the pit at a Quick Stop oil change place in the parking lot of the shop I worked at.

Looks like the ratcheting spring lock that keeps the arms in position after the lift goes off the ground wasn't working, or was removed.

That was my first thought. A guy at a shop I used to work at had that happen when he was lifting a F350. The locking mechanism probably couldn't handle the weight and when the pad lost it's hold the arm instantly swung out, dropping the rear corner of the truck.

Dropping a car was always a big fear of mine. It's kind of ironic then that I lifted a car too high once and crushed the trunk lid after I forgot to close it. If it was any other service bay in the entire shop it wouldn't have happened but that particular lift was angled differently and had a big beam right above it.

Thanks a lot guy! I just won the Model Design Category at the Victorian Automotive Design Awards. It was hosted by the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by GM Holden, Toyota, Ford and The Automotive Horizon Foundation. Pretty thrilled!

I also just scored a job at GM Holden as a Creative Hard Modeller building concept cars, so the hard work is paying off!
