It's definitely possible for a boat covered in ice to sink. Confirmed by my roommate who has an M.S. in fluid and thermo engineering. But IF AND ONLY IF the water begins to leak in to the boat. If the boat were completely water-tight, then it would float no matter how much ice was on it. But that much ice is bound to make the boat sit lower in the water. If it begins to fill with water, the weight of the steel and aluminum boat will overpower the buoyancy force of the ice and the whole thing will sink.Last edited by CorvallisBMW; 01-06-2009, 12:02 AM.

GOOD POINT!!!
BUT...
What about all the boats in the background? They appear to be floating...

Originally posted by CorvallisBMW View PostNo it doesn't. Ice bergs float with 90% of their mass below the water. Put 200,000 tons of steel on that and you get a giant lump sinking to the bottom of the ocean.

Boats are not "floaty things" - I suggest renting "Titanic" for further research (pulse you get to see Kate Winslet boobies)Originally posted by Matt-Bhey does anyone know anyone who gets upset and makes electronics?
