You don’t want this. You want the trickiest, most dangerous, oldest model you can find. Only then can you prove to the world that you’re a man.

Yea, Tillman was a HERO. He gave up millions in the NFL to be a Ranger and serve his country. It's just a shame he was killed by ff... IMO Iraq isnt going to end anytime soon, and if we try to pull everyone back all at once, that place is gonna be a breeding ground for more anti-western fundamentalists. When I was there, we werent fighting just Iraqis. Iranians, Syrians, Jordanians, Indonesians and Chechnyans among others flocked to Iraq to fight us and the Brits. Not that I endorse the war but if we pull out, Iraq goes into a civil war, democracy there fails(not that it had a great chance) and they lose control of their country opening it up for all the jihadist that want a crack at us. If they stayed in their own little area none of this would matter, but they can get us where we live. They've proven that. Us being over there no matter how much it sucks is a way to prevent that from happening. And just for the record, I'm not some brainwashed gun-toting republican. I personally think Bush is an idiot and that politicians should be shot. They all have their hands in either arab oil or the weapons companies and are making a killing at our expense.

lol, you completely misunderstood my point. what makes him different from any other person who volunteers for the military? does the guy who makes minimum wage sacrifice less because he wasnt a big star football player making millions. thats my point. that he's called a hero just cause he was 'famous' before. thousands of soldiers have died in the middle east, you dont see the news making a huge deal about them. why, cause they werent NFL players. and THAT is what pisses me off. I want a 3 hour TV special about each and every soldier who has died in combat or no TV specials at all. Who the FUCK cares if he gave up millions, he gave his life and that is all that matters and should be mentioned. His story should be no more important than any other soldiers, yet it is cause 'he gave up millions'. bullshit imo.

You can criticize the administration all you want, but dont go slandering the troops who fight for your freedom to bitch about something you have no idea about on an internet forum. Alright cool, cause I hate it when people criticize the troops for fighting for what they believe in and OUR safety. We owe them greatly, regarless of your thoughts on the war or the current administration.
While I agree, every soldier is a hero, Tillman did something that very few Americans would even think of. He, if he so chose, could have retired and played golf with his millions. Id like to see how many current troops if put in Tillmans shoes would make the same decision. Im pretty confident that 95% of them wouldnt have gone to war. That is what makes him a hero to me at least.Back to my roots

I guess you're right about him not being too much different than anyone that makes minimum wage going to fight the war, but I honestly dont think too many people in HIS position would have done what he did. I was with the Marine Corps Infantry and everyone knows that grunts hate EVERYONE that isnt a grunt, especially other branches but we had mad respect for that guy. On second thought, we didnt hate everyone. Close air support and Tanks = Grunts best friend!

they all put their lives at risk. singling tillman out as a hero is saying it is more heroic to risk wealth than life, and that is what is wrong with this country.

No its not saying that, its saying that Tillman is one of the few whos willing to put all else aside and fight for something one believes in and for the freedoms we all enjoy. To say that tillman personifies a notion of risking wealth over life is off based, rather he personifies the values that most Americans should share if you ask me, not what is wrong with this country. Name another person similar to Tillmans financial and social situation that enlisted. I bet you cant.Back to my roots

you keep helping my argument. who cares what his 'financial and social situation' is. that shouldnt matter. does the fact that he had a very good 'financial and social situation' make his life more valuable? They ALL risk their lives, they ALL 'put all else aside'. im not saying tillman personifies wealth over life, im saying the media and america as a whole personifies this notion. i am in no way putting down tillman, just the way everyone is reacting to his situation. just because he gave up a lush life shouldnt mean he should get singled out as a hero over the poor 18yr old with no other option but to go into the army. they both risked/gave up their lives and should be treated as equals. not a 3hr big tv special about one and a flash of a name on a local news station for the other(if that).Last edited by madjurgen; 11-02-2006, 11:04 PM.
