As a really stupid teenage guy, i look at a lexus LS and say, why would i want that over a 5? i personally do not want to be seen in a old persons car like a lexus, the styling is still bland, and the chassis dynamics of a 5 kick a LS's ass. that and a BMW is wayyyyy cooler in a college students eyes.

Is it good to multitask while you drive? NO, not at all. But does it happen, and often is it unavoidable, YES. Hence why I have the automatic e46.

I find it much easier and safer to have one less thing to think about while I drive. Like I said before, for a daily driver for someone who does about 18k a year, an automatic luxury car can be the prefect solution. I enjoy manuals a lot, and I have only had manual cars for the most part before this one, but after a while you get sick of traffic with the 5 spd, etc. And even those park sensing systems, I never liked them till I actually drove cars daily with them, and its amazing how nice it is to parrallel park in Boston w/out trashing your bumper, since now you can get real close without tapping the car behind you.

And before someone says it, I used to sell cars, and move them around all day. If you think salesman don't just back up till they hit the car behind them, then you are sadly mistaken....... Park sense hence saved mucho damage from occuring, so automated shit isn't all bad.

The self park thing I could care less about. Just not me. And I typically don't use cruise control at all, and I don't trust and ecu to determine a safe distance. I still think I am safer on my cellphone, driving my auto e46 than the soccerr mom in front of me in a Yukon that dpends on the parking sensors to move the thing around.

^ The difficulty is in the video I posted in the 2nd page. Seems to have gone completely unnoticed. Anyhow, if people were not going to use it, Lexus would not have made it in the first place.

Taking the responsability from the driver's hands isnt only something Lexus is going. Mercedes has their speed matching cruise control, and other companies are going for the same thing. You cant blame them as they are businesses and they just want to make money.

What annoys me is that I believe that functions like auto-park and cruise control take part of the driver's attention when it comes to road driving, so in the case of him needing to act quickly, chances are it wouldnt happen.

These computers arent perfect, if you've seen Mercedes demo of their cruise control to the media you would know how badly that S class got totalled when it was supposed to make a perfect stop. Now we look at the Lexus and all the complications. This maybe something that's not so important as I'm sure with time automotive companies will make these options almost completely fool proof. But whatever...

I still disagree with promoting removing the driver's responsabilities behind the wheel. Someone mentioned that after work they are tired and they want luxury. Last thing I want to see is some driver who is tired and depends on their ECU for 1/2 of the driving.

But again, that's just me.

I agree with him though.... why the hell bother driving if a machine is going to do everything for you? Leaving your work in the hands of a machine will cause you to slack off even more behind the wheel.

I don't really see the big deal about the autoparking thing. VW had an autopark prototype Beetle in the early 80s. It's nothing new, and it's been on the Prius in Japan for a couple of years. Toyota probably figured that the only market for something like that in the US was the luxury market, and stuck it in the new LS. And from what I've seen, it's a bitch to program the thing to park--most people probably won't even bother to use it. I know I wouldn't.
