I have an 05 Dodge 2500 that I've put 33,000 miles on in a little over a year and it's as tight as the day I bought it. No squeaks, rattles, shit falling apart or anything else. And it hasn't had an easy life. American vehicles have come a long way since even the late 90s.

I agree. Both my parents have American cars (a Buick and a Chrysler), and they've both held up well--the Buick has 80,000 miles on it (it's a 2000) and it's still a good car.
My problem with American cars is that they lack the refinement and tactile quality (ie, interior) of foreign ones. I don't think that the Buick will be a very nice car 20 years from now like my E30.
my mom just got a new jetta, they're really awesome cars. i have to say i had my doubts, but there are safety features and other tiny little things that make that car worth wayyyyy more than what VW is asking for them. they're pretty fun to drive too. if i were you, i'd push your mom to at least test drive one, they've got plenty of cargo space in the trunk and they're a bargain.
