      My DD's I have owned were a 91 626 and now a 96 jetta.

Both FWD (but thats fucking nice not getting stuck every 3 feet in snow), both got over 30mpg which is nice, although I must admit, the jetta handles like dick compared to my mazda which happened to be a complete pile of crap with a rusted frame...

      My DD requirements were:

      Good MPG
      FWD (for snow reasons)
Reliable (jetta seems to be pretty good so far)

Yeah I guess thats it, I'm not picky when it comes to a DD lol

      EDIT:

I would also suggest getting a car you won't be tempted into spending gobs of money on for mods ;)

Not saying I really like them, but I dont normally like FWD, but I can get in one of those and really have some fun with it.
The e30 is pretty timeless, and I love my e46, but its nothing like my e30 at all. If you want a fun sedan that is a blast to drive, check out a MB 300e/e320. Had one of those, and they actually handle amazingly well, and are very fast sedans.
I was actually going to suggest an older Mercedes W124 series, but I didn't think that was what he was going for. I really like them, they handle well, and they're built like a tank. They're worth a look.
