    pretty 'turbed right about now

so months ago my dad bought a 86 325e 4dr for my GF. it took awhile to get it registered and two weeks ago she finally started driving it to work.

its a project car for sure but it runs well. it had some crappy gijoes tint on the rear window, and the window defrost was not working. so this morning at about 12am i was bored and went to work on it. along the way i fixed a trunk leak and got to the tint. the tint was already bubbling and peeling in some spots. i get it all off and wasnt about to try to get the residue off without any cleaner. i figured out the defroster was unplugged on the right side, i plugged it back in. i get done and go back into my warm condo (it was hella cold last night).

im sitting surfing the net and about a hour after i was done with the car i hear a cracking/breaking glass sound. im in my boxers so i didnt want to run outside. i figured it wasnt anything but i peeped out the window and didnt see anything. i figured it was someone throwing something away in the dumpster out front (i had all my living room lights on and the porch light). so i went back to looking around on the computer and went to bed.

i hear my GF get up this morning, thought nothing of it passed out again. i wake to the front door opening again (she had just left) and i hear "babe, someone broke my back window"...............so i get up and give her the keys to another car and she leaves for work late. i inspected the car and couldnt find anything that would break the window. the glass looked like it was pushed outwards, but then i figured out its because she slammed the car door and all the air pushed the window out.

i dunno if it was something i did or some random ballsy MF walked by and broke it out. i cant see how i broke it by taking the tint off. i did have a drop light sitting on the parcel shelf so i could see though. the only way i can see it being something that i did is if the light got the glass warm and the combination of the hot and cold made it crack after it got back to the outside tempature?

all in all im pissed cause its been one thing after another, its her first car and has been nothing but a pain in the arse.

anyone got deals on window replacement??

notes: removed rear window tint in the cold, after hour glass shattered.want to know why?and how easy/cheap to fix?

if the rear window defrost stays on long enough, it can cause it to explode.

are you serious? i wonder if thats why it was unplugged.

yeah, he got her a car so she could work. she pays him back a couple of hundred a month. it was a auction special out of CA so he paid bout 1100 after shipping it up here.

how hard is the window to change out? would i be better off getting a window and having a shop do it?

thanks for the responses guys shes a little more upset than i over it, but you know how girls get.

Always have a shop do glass work if you don't know what you're doing - otherwise you'll have another leak to fix down the line.

A friend had his E30's rear window explode one winter, I've gathered that it just sort of happens sometimes.

Call you local dealer and ask them how much a new rear window costs. I know a kid that replaced his windshield with the help of a mechanic friend. A new front windshield costs a bit over $100 and with the CCA discount you can get it for even cheaper. A rear windshield is probably not too much more.

It is an easy job. You'll want to replace the rubber weatherstripping at the same time, that is where the costs add up. For the rear you need weatherstripping, two lock strips, as well as the two angle pieces for the bottom corners. Make sure you run a sealant between the window and the weatherstripping.

dont dare buy one from the stealership. The way of window repalcement in chicago with 15+ year old cars is--- go to the local junk yard. In the Chicago area they would replace glued in windshields for about 100 dollars-labor and parts included. the winshield/ rear window isnt glued in the reg. e30, so it isnt hard, but if you havent done it before, go somewhere to have it done or you may just have 2 broken windows.

I have repalced quite a few widshields in e30, and I would say, do not use any sealant whatsoever, and dont replace any seals unless it is really dryrotted.- unless your car is show quality- it isnt going to leak either, just use alot of silicone spray for ease of installation.

                        Is you gf's car a 4-door?

the friend my brother is referring to had a 4-door and his defrost button was permanently pushed in. if you tried to push it to turn it off, the whole button would pop out of the dashboard. One day his dad was grabbing something out of the backseat, and upon closing the rear door (he claims to this day he didnt slam it) the rear window just shattered. My dad said it happened to 4-doors a lot, but i dunno.

Oh yeah, that's a good point. The reason he bought the front windshield from the $tealership was because most junk-yard e30's windshields are pitted pretty badly.

Rear window would be really cheap from a junkyard though :p

I once tried to install a windshield in a dodge, (couldn't do it) I had to pay, the guy used a wire, charged me 100 bucks and did it in five seconds.
