Tempered glass can and will shatter for no reason. It's heat treated, and as a result has some strange properties.
In your case, though, I'd venture to say that you caused it - either with the heat from the bulb or by hooking up the wire.
You don't need a weatherstrip - the E30 uses an indestructible synthetic rubber called EPDM for its window gaskets. By indestructible I mean it won't rot. It can be ripped, torn, and/or abraded, but it will last longer than the car if unmolested.
Don't try to install it yourself. If you see an autoglass company truck, flag the driver down and ask him how much cash he'll charge to install your used glass. Most autoglass installers love to do side work for cheap.
If you don't have time to screw around, get on the phone and call some local glass shops for quotes. If you're willing to drive the car in, you might get it done for less than $50. Don't let them sell you a new glass - that'll be the first thing they try. ;)
