Thanks for all the ecouragement, guys! I'm really excited about this, I've always wanted to learn electrical, and I'm very interested in learning more about home audio systems, all the different kinds of setups and components, and how to make it all work. I can't wait for Monday, the rest of this week at work is just going to DRAG ON.

Congrats man, but heed Daves warning. When I worked landscape construction on all the beach houses in my area all the owners were total douschbags. A couple set up cameras and refused to pay for a bunch of random shit without justification.

Originally posted by Eurospeed View PostI got a new job today, and I'm pretty damn stoked about it. I'll be working for Premiere Home Systems, a local comany that does home theater and home security installs. 90% of their work is done in multi-million dollar homes, as their products and labor are NOT cheap. We're talking like huge in-home theaters, home networking, wall mount touch screens, security, the works. I'll be starting at a bit less than I make now, but I'll get substantial raises very quickly based on performance, and once I enter the apprenticeship program, I'll also get mandatory raises conditional upon completion of different certifications.
My job that I'm at now (Fuqua Homes) is good, but several things lately have caused me to completely lose faith and interest in the company. Since the housing market has entered a slow down, for about the last 4-5 months, we've been going through periods of partial layoffs, resulting in 2-4 day workweeks, sometimes not working complete weeks at all. We are able to claim partial unemployment, but even with that, I rarely come close to what I would be normally making. On top of that, in the last year, I've been offered and interviewed for 2 promotions, both of which have resulted in nothing happening. I've been given the same runaround both times, being told that "they had to talk to corporate", and "although there isn't something open right now, as soon as it does...", all that shit. And this last time I was promoted from quality control to foreman of 2 crews, I wasn't even given a pay raise.
The bottom line is that when I started working for them 2 years ago, it was made to seem like I could move up very quickly, and I did start to. But within the last year, things have quickly deteriorated and I've lost interest in the company. I have a family to think of, and with this new job, I have to opportunity to make A LOT more money and make a much more promising career from it. With advances in home entertainment technology and entertainment, this is a rapidly growing field with an even faster growing market of people that are willing to spend top-dollar for state of the art entertainment and security.
I think there might be a few dozen customers in Oregon that have the financial means to spend big bucks on a home theater system.
Good luck with this job though.

Congrats - Sounds like a interesting job, and a good move financially as well. It will be nice having a reasource for HT info around here as well. Like Dave said, get ready for some picky people, but that sounds like the only static in a job like that. Very cool!

Good luck with it Josh. Just remember that a lot of the people who will be buying this high end stuff are VERY demanding. Be ready to deal with some serious assholes.

Congrats. Are you going to be an installer? Or like a manager? I am sure you will end up in some celebs homes along the way:p

Good stuff man. 'Grats on getting out of a rut and somewhere that you can advance again and hopefully have fun doing it. Sounds like a job I'd have fun doing :) If I wasn't a racer, and couldn't assist my racing from the job I have now, I would have been gone long ago. Still thinking about it though, just not much time to find other opportunities. Glad you found something, have fun.
