+1 for Tire Rack leaving stuff w/o a signature requirement. I guess I'm the opposite of you Josh - I sometimes leave a note for Jason (my normal UPS guy - went to H.S. w/ him), letting him know just to take it back to the hub and I'll come get it. I especially do it with BMW/evo parts, and electronics. You can't deny shipping damage when they bring out a box to me, and there's a gaping hole in the side.
I also get Jason a 1/5th of decent Tequila every Christmas, so tipping your UPS / Postal guy helps out. I left my Postal carrier a 1/5 of burbon a few years ago, but he left me a note thanking me, but that he doesn't drink. Cool guy though. I forgot, but I was going to get a Starbucks card for him this year.
Whenever I deal with a person, and get the option - I ask for signature require just so I see the box before it gets dumped like an orphan on my doorstep.
They make 3 attempts to deliver before returning to sender, or stalling it at the hub - hust so you know for future refrence.
Also, if you hate the signature require thing, go to the hub and leave a card on file with your signature - then they will in the future leave packages that otherwise would have required one. I know Fedex does it, and I believe UPS does too.
Tipping your driver at the Holidays helps though I think. Any time I've been expecting something and leave a note, my guy writes on my note he was there, and lets me know to leave a note the next day as to what I want to have him do.
