Any you guys ever had your arm up the ass of a cow all the way to your shoulder? Well, me neither. But I took a job with a cow breeding outfit one Christmas break during H.S. , and that would have been my job if I didn't know the owner.

I showed up for work at o'dark-thirty, and got told I was doing farm runs with one of the senior guys. When I was asked if I wanted the job, the owner said it was 'support work for inseminators', and that was supposed to be me taking bull jizz thermos (100# jug full of liquid N2 & vials full of bull jizz) to the senior guy, picking up stuff he threw on the ground while working, and whatever else he needed. His job was to drive us to the farm, BS with the farmer, and put on the glove that goes to your shoulder, and put the jizz in the cow. Nothing else. So I was supposed to lead the cows to the pen where he worked, and take them away after he was done & repeat. Sort of an assembly line, but I did all the work aside from the true 'deed'.

Well, this fella explained things a little different on the way there. He said he'd do the 1st cow as an example, but then we were going to switch jobs. Now, the reason I got the job was the owner was a neighbor, and told me he'd hire me anytime I needed work. He & I were on really good terms, like anytime they went on vacation I was their guy who took care of their animals, cut grass, mail, -did whatever they needed 'till they got back, so the bottom line was the guy knew me since I was 10 or so, and trusted me with their house when gone. This dink had no idea I knew the owner at all, as he hired me at his house and we did all my employment paperwork at his kitchen table, so the 1st time anybody saw me was that morning and nobody asked how I got hired, so I never said a word.

We rolled up to the farm, and the other guy had explained what he wanted to see happen, and I knew I wasn't going to do it, mainly because he was getting twice the hourly wage I was. So we got setup, the thermos was staged, and the cows were all in a separate pen that were to get knocked up that day. So he did the 1st cow, peeled off the glove, and said something to the effect of "You got it, I'm going to go sit in the truck with the heater, and I'll drive to the next farm when you're done.

I looked him square, and said "No, that wasn't what I was hired to do."

He looked like he wanted to hit me, and said he'd tell the owner I wasn't fast enough, or whatever he wanted and I better get to work, or else we would drive back after this farm and I'd get fired.

I again looked right at him, and told him we really shouldn't wait, we should just call the owner who was still at home asleep. Guy looked at me and sort of blew me off, like I was bluffing. There was a little more to the story, but long story short, I told the guy I knew the owners home phone # from memory, and that if he so much as looked at me funny I'd call the owner - let alone do his share of the work. I asked him how long he worked for the owner (less than a year), and I told him I had known the owner many, many years - and if asked to trust one of us over the other, that I was confident he would take my word over this loser.

All I did all winter break once we 'understood' each other was I led the cows to the pen, and then out when done. I made the other guy do all his own setup, takedown, cleanup, and anything else I would have been doing if he hadn't tried to make me do his job. I never said anything to the owner, didn't have to as this idiot made some sexual comment about the owner's daughter, who had gone to work for her Dad, the owner, that same winter break. Owner told me he let him go a few weeks after Christmas break, and I then told him the bit about the guy trying to take advantage of the situation that same time frame.

Worst job ever had to go to my buddy Sam, who took a job at a leather tanning joint - He said he had to cut off/pull off the cock & balls that were still attached to the hides. That place must have really stunk, as his apartment smelled horrible after he started that job. Luck for him it was short term, as he'd just gotten out of the Army, and was waiting for a real job he'd been hired for.

I think that the worst job that I ever had was in telemarketing. In most telemarketing shops they abuse the employees because they know that the people we are calling would rather not be called. If we were not producing enough business, they would make us all stand up in front of our cubicles and we could sit down after we started closing more deals. And then there was this big glass enclosed office elevated in the middle of the sales floor where this group of "higher ups" would listen to everyone's phone calls waiting for you to mess up or say the wrong thing. Somehow whenever I lost my temper with a customer it was always the exact time that I was being monitored. I had a pretty thick stack of "Final Warnings" in my HR file so I was always on pins and needles about getting fired. I really NEEDED this job. And one thing about getting fired in telemarketing is that EVERYONE knows you got fired. 300 people on the sales floor would all have their attention towards the employee being escorted to his desk with a box and then escorted to the door.

Also, you were expected to be at work EVERY day. If you were sick, you had better come to work sick or at least come the next day with a doctor's note. If it snowed outside, you better walk to work if the roads were too bad to drive on. We had a call-in line to determine whether or not the company would be open but most times it was. There would be a friendly message on the call-in line from one of the managers that said, "We will be open today so be careful while driving blah..blah.." and when we got to work, we discovered that the managers took the day off while the supervisors and telemarketers were in there working.

Sometimes the computer systems would break down and they would make us punch out and leave the building for 3 hours but we were expected to come back and if we didn't, we were told that we might get fired. And being that most of us were living paycheck to paycheck at $7 an hour, nobody had the balls to challenge the system.

We were open every day except for Christmas and Thanksgiving so calling people up on holidays was a real drag. Some customers would complain, "It's Easter Sunday and we are having dinner!" or "You couldn't find a better time to call than Mother's Day?" And then there were the customers who were too drunk or too high to have a conversation.. and then I would get nailed by the people in the glass enclosed booth because I didn't sell them on all of the offers.. and I was like "Listen to the tape! The guy is obviously too incoherent to know his own name." and they would tell me that I still should have gotten the guy's name.

In spite of all of the turmoil that we went through, we still found ways to have fun while at work, like tossing the nerf football around the cubicles while the supervisor wasnt watching

My worst fucking job ever lasted a total of 2 days.

When I still lived in Livingston, TN I applied for a job at the Berkline furniture plant where 60% of Livingston works anyway. A HS friend's father recognized me when I came in to turn in my application and knew that I was very skilled with computers. He told me he would make sure they placed me in a CNC computer operating position paying $12.50.

I was 18 years old right out of HS and this was to be my summer job. I was stoked! First day was all orientation and meeting people I would be working with. The CNC system was not that complicated and took very little training for me to catch onto. Even better - my hours were going to be from 2PM-10PM which is perfect. Plenty of time to sleep in and get daily tasks completed - off with plenty of time to party at night.

Come in on my second day... walk into the CNC department to start setting up machines to cut side for recliners and the CNC dept. manager comes up and says,

"Randy here has been working at Berkline for 5 years and I decided to let him work the CNC saw. You're now what we call the 'backup boy'. Here's some gloves all you do is pick up scrap and put it in this cart. Once yer done dump it in the pile and sort out what we can still use."

At this point I'm fuming because the redneck is struggling to grasp the concept the CNC requires knowledge of how the use of a keyboard yet he now has my job because of seniority? To make matters worse he keeps pulling me aside and asking me how to operate it. After about an hour of this shit then the manager says this,

"By the way 'Backup Boy' pay is $6.50 an hour and then you get bumped up to $7.25 after 6 weeks"

I didn't say a word. I handed him my gloves gave him a big smile and walked right the fuck out. When my friend's father got word he called to apologize when he found out what happened and explained that he is a mid level manager like the CNC manager so there was nothing he could do. Apparently the CNC manager did not like the fact a newbie was going to be making what they consider "good pay" over some of his senior employees.

They called me back 3 months later to see if I would take the same job for $10/hr but I declined. Working in the stench of redneck and illegal hispanic aliens was not worth any amount of money.

After that I got a kick ass job making big ass corrugated boxes for other area factories to pack shit in. There were a total of 5 employees that included the owner. Sure I only made $7/hr but all we ever did was glue and staple boxes to palettes when we weren't racing pallet jacks, hanging off forklifts, and taking multiple smoke breaks.

Mine is not as bad as some, but it was still pretty gross.

My friends parents own a dairy, so occasionally I would help them out with a few extra jobs here and there for a couple extra bucks. Most of the time it was washing the cases that they cart the milk around in, but that usually was a somewhat good time cause it just took time and was hot. One night though my friends mom told us there was a bunch of sour milk out back that needed to be transferred from the milk jugs it was in into 5 gallon buckets. This stuff was gross. Seriously, I have never seen chocolate sour creme until I poured out jug after jug of 3 month old chocolate milk. We literally took t-shirts, sprayed them with cologne, and wrapped them aroud our faces. You could still smell the crap. Probably one of the grossest things I have ever done. Just imagine being finished and having a few 5 gallon buckets of sour milk. UUUUhhgggggg!! Makes my stomach turn just thinking about it.

I think I did it one other time after that, but I'm glad that wasn't an everyday thing for me.

Nothing nearly as bad as everyone else, but my first job working at Baskin Robbins. The owner was a really creepy dude that smiled no matter what mood he was in. Fucking weird. Anyway, we didn't get any breaks, it was during the summer so I worked harder then I have ever worked before serving ice cream to 8 hours worth of people. And when I wasn't serving ice cream, I was cleaning. We had to use bleach water for everything, so my hands got all dried to hell and cracked open all over. I actually almost dripped blood in someones ice cream one time. I finally got fired after one of the dipper cases got turned off accidentally at night and 40 gallons ($500 worth) of ice cream got melted. I was happy to go. Food service sucks.
