Credit Card numbers can be stolen at random. While most people have been led to believe that their credit card numbers are stolen from stolen laptops or website breaches this is rarely true.

About 90% of your basic online stolen credit card numbers come from hackers finding security holes in online shopping carts of poorly designed merchant websites.

First the run a program that generates huge numbers of credit card numbers that meet a particular card companies algorithm and usually that program can be told to generate a large number of card numbers based on a particular bank ID# (this is the first 4-6 digits of your card that identifies the bank that issued the card).

Second, they take all those numbers and dump them into a database.

Next, they run a script that is programmed to communicate through the security hole of the hacked mechant website. The script attempts to get a .50-.01 cent authorization on every card number in their database. The declined cards are unissued numbers and the ones that recieve and authorization response are the ones they know are good. Those are the ones they use for fraudulent purchases. Problem is you rarely see the small initial authorization because it is never settled & posted to your account.

Here's the cool part. As long as it's Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express all you have to do is call them report it stolen and they will charge everything back automatically. No liability BUT DO IT NOW!

Yeah just call your credit card company and say it was a fraudulent charge. You will get your money back, I would chop that card up too

Call right away and inform them (BANK). If you waite they may hassle you. I made a purchase from an online place(VW parts) something did not seem right so I called to inform BofA something seemed out of place. The bank stopped them before it could even be used, they did try.

After they do the charge back what do they do to prevent it from happening again, issue you a new card number?

I lost my credit card once so I called called them, to my understanding if you lose it or get it stolen they cancel it an give you a new number. I got a new card with a new number.

I called WF right away and they closed the card # and will issue another one. Now I have to wait for a letter from them that I'll need to sign so that they can credit everything back and also wait for a new card to arrive!

Charges were actually made at a supermarket somewhere in the bay, and I've been in sacto all weekend and the card is with me.... crazy shit.

I knew all that, pretty much all of it has been on Dateline at least a few times.

Back in the 80's I knew of people who would dumpster dive at department stores because they would always throw away their old reciepts instead of shredding them.. not to mention that back then the ENTIRE credit card number would be printed on the reciept.

Here My bank issues (under request) a credit card number valid for ONE operation, and for the amount of money you tell them, so you actually get 1 credit card for each purchase, this "temporary" credit card ceases to exist after the operation.

                        It's a hassle, but safe.;)

                          Jean,

Make sure they did not close your acount and open a new one. This will pay havoc on your credit score.

That does not sound like a hassle at all. In fact it would reduce the number of impulse purchases that people make when they max out their cards every month with nothing to show for it. At least if I had to call up my creditor every time I was about to make a purchase, that would give me time to think about what I was about to do. And I am sure that they will never allow that over in the US being that the CC companies get rich off of our impulses.

So this is getting better, WF is taking their sweet time. I made some calls though, and would rather not discuss more details that I have now but a police report is now in place also and I'll go as far as I need to...
