Are you smarter than a 5th grader?

I'm watching this show right now and becoming furious, this represents so much that is wrong with TV and pop culture. These people are getting huge money for answering questions that SHOULD BE COMMON KNOWLEDGE. They're glamorizing stupidity by giving these people their 15 minutes.

$50,000 question: How many sides are on a trapezoid?
She didn't know it and still got the money.

Sorry if this is another pointless thread but I needed to vent.

It's a superhero with huge traps, like Freakazoid. So my answer is two sides - the daily cover and the superhero alterego.

              This is my Brother

              EPISODE 101A
              Airdate: 2/27/07

40-year-old Seth, UCLA American History graduate, takes the stage and picks Laura as the first 5th grader to help him out. She compliments him by commenting on how smart he looks, but Jeff Foxworthy tells her that looks can be deceiving. After a quick rundown of the rules, Seth picks First Grade Social Studies for his first question. The first question is:

In what month do we observe Columbus Day?

He incorrectly guesses September and with an assist in the form of the correct answer from his 5th grade helper, Laura, gets the question right. His next 5th grader helper is Spencer who helps him choose a 4th grade math question as his next question. Spencer saves him and he moves onto the next question, which is a question on US History. Despite his knowledge of US History, he doesn’t know the answer to this question:

Who was the first US President to be impeached?

He walks away with $5,000 and makes the admission that he is not smarter than a 5th grader.

He has to wait six weeks to get the cash

I knew October & Andrew Johnson.

You know they screen out the bright ones, right? I mean, really - how could it be any fun at all if the premise is that the adult beats a 5th grader? That's expected, so they need real genuine idiots for this to fly as a show and to make for any sort of 'good' television.

Sadly, I doubt many people do actually test above and get screened out. Common sense is hardly that anymore, or so I hear.

I'm really glad I like most of the Discovery channel's content. Aside from Discovery & sister channels, CSI, & Heros, I just shake my head at the networks' idea of what I would want to watch.

It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.

It's not even just that. Don't forget that the money has to come from somewhere and that somewhere is insurance. These game shows go to insurance companies and demonstrate that their selection criterion and question difficulty makes the losing money (winning for a contestant) an insurable risk. When that guy won the first million on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and breezed through it, the insurance company refused to pay for a long time because they said that they made it easy on him because the audience was getting tired of no one winning. Of course they're not going to let a genius on that is going to smoke the questions. Plus that's not nearly as entertaining as the dildos they have on there now.

BTW, thanks a TON for the pics man! I will reply to you a little later, I have a whole slew of questions if you don't mind, I'm just gathering my thoughts...

No probs, if you have questions, that's good - it means you are going to do this yourself rather than buy the swap car. I have a lot more respect for builders over owners, if you know what I mean.

In a society where we care more about a dead slut than our president / foreign policy, i don't find this too shocking. But I agree, America is going to shit as far as education is concerned.
