Getting 2mo. payed vacation the hard way

Well today i went to work and 15min. before lunch they had a plant meeting. And they said this is your last day here grab your stuff and go home. It would of been 4 years at the end of April for me working there. The comany i worked for was Fleetwood Travel Trailers of Maryland. They also closed two other plants, one in Tex. and one in Cali. So now i can have plunty of time to finish some stuff around here and if any one desides to have a spring meet in the PA,MD area this spring i'll have alot of time to go to one. Now with this next 2mo. payed and then 6mo. unployment coming to me i'll have alot of time to find another job and get stuff done.

I don't know if the 2mo. thing is a state law or Fed. law. But they do have to give you 30 day notice before they close the doors. In my case they didn't so i get the next 2 months payed.

That sucks man. The severance pay will soothe the pain a bit, but it still sucks.

What kind of plant was it? Keep your eyes open and you'll find something even better. Good luck!

It was a travel trailer plant. We made 19'-39' trailers like this one.

I had a easy job, putting in the slide outs.

Sorry to hear it man. Same shit happened to me about 3 years ago- I had been with the company ~17 years though....

Make sure you take your time finding a new job- don't dick around too long so that your benefits run out, but take the time needed to find a good one. Also, start thinking and planning for health insurance NOW!! COBRA is expensive, but might be the best deal for you. Buying individual health insurance is expensive as hell to get any kind of decent coverage- it's ridiculous. I went without insurance for almost 2 years, and finally got high deductible insurance through Blue Cross of NC- but I've got good coverage if the shit really hits the fan.

Whatever you do, do NOT buy health insurance from any company affiliated to Mega- they promise all this great coverage for little $$ but read the fine print and you'll see that their coverage sucks and their limits are very low before they cut you off.

                      Bret.

I'm not going try to take too long to find a job. I was paying $18.50 per week for health ins. There's going to be a few plant/warehouse jobs coming here in late spring. My buddy's wanting me to get on as a prison gaurd, but i told him i don't want to see guys having buttsex all day.

Also if you have had any health probs in the last few years you wont get coverage (The GF has not need to use hre coverage in 4 1/2 years we tried to switch her to a cheaper but similar plan an they went back 10 years ago to decline her). So I would stay with the cobra coverage it will be the best bet.

Also file for your unemployment benefits NOW. And don't tell them that you got a severance package. I worked in a plant in Odenton that was shut down unexpectedly and the mistake that I made was that I didn't file for benefits until I spent all of my money.

And then once you get your benefits, see if you can find a temporary contract job that will pay you 3 times your unemployment. Take the job, report it to the MD Unemployment hotline so they will close your case and then once the contract is over, go back and re-open it. If you make a certain amount of money in a year's time you can renew your situation. I collected unemployment for almost 3 years because I was taking contract assignments that paid me $40 an hour. So at the end of the 2-week period I would report in that I made $3600. Then after the assignment was over, I would reinstate my claim for benefits.

I was laid off at the beginning of the year. COBRA is damn expensive. Luckily my live-in g/f's health insurance covers "Domestic Partners", so I have full board health insurance for free which is a relief. Trust me, being unemployed gets boring FAST. Finally you have enough time to work on the car, but really shouldn't be blowing money since you don't know when you'll get a job. Horrible paradox.

Good news though, just got off the phone with a recruiter, and I am flying to San Francisco on monday for a final round interview with one of the jobs I was really hoping for.
