THD was the model of great customer service through the late 90s. Very few people here remember that, particularly in the pnw. You had Eagle hardwares out there and THD moved in and took them over. When Marcus and Blank left the company, the whole culture went with them. Stockholders and board members brought in a guy from GE and he totally changed the model making it impossible to hire quality people. A company that once ran at 10% turnover was starting to climb to a 35% turnover. The fact that he took benefits, bonuses, and stock options away from everyone except store managers didn't sit well with the long term executives in Store Support. They started quitting, and he brought younger less experienced people in to corperate instead of promoting from within at store level. Almost EVERY original exec/ store associate has either quit or been forced out. My mom is one of two original female execs left in the whole company. You want to talk about pissed? How bout spending your life building a company, taking it from 3 stores to 2500 stores, being the model of excellence (yes LOWES modeled their stores after THD), Splitting stock three times in two years, and being able to watch the lowest position associats make it to a merchant status in just 5 years, then some dick comes in and totally ruins it.
You finally force him out after paying him 225 million to leave and the company itself is almost un-fixable. Talk to my mom and then tell me ho pissed you are. She still works 60 hour weeks to try to change all your minds..... it will go back to the old model, it is going to take some time, but it will. I remain a District manager for the largest vendor in floor and wall and will stay due to my loyalties. My older brother is the same.
Here is a hint, if you can't find an associate, find a vendor. We know more and can find what you need quicker.
I'm sorry you all feel that way, but understand there are people working their asses off to change your opinion.Yours truly,
Rich

Oh yeah, and the reason LOWES is so clean and in stock and packed full of employees is because NO ONE SHOPS THERE! You should have rented your saw from them. I am sure you could have waltzed right in there and would have had 10 saws and 15 employees to help you carry it out.Yours truly,

I could write a book about the place but even worse than that, my wife doesn't like getting dirty so I'm lifting all the tile, mortor, grout, Hardybacker, tile and everything else by myself. And guess who's going to be the only one installing it all as well...I'm not doing shit around the house once I get the bathroom started.
We had a pretty big chain of home improvement stores around here called "Hechinger". They were in business long before home improvement projects became the "in thing". Most of the customers were eggheads and the skillful handyman types of men who aced shop class. And to give you an idea of how sexist our society was 25 years ago, they rarely showed women in their ads or demonstrations. And if there was a woman in an ad, she was in the part of the ad where they were selling plants or curtains. The rare demonstrations that included women were usually done in the capacity of assisting a man. They never really gave the impression that a woman could do a project alone or without the assistance of a man.
Anyhow this company still had an old fashioned way of doing things and when the Home Depot came along, Hechinger tried to "out depot" them by adding their "Home & Project Center" as a separate segment of the store. They were too far behind the times to keep up and they eventually went out of business in the mid 90's
And HD's business model is just typical of what the business world is doing these days. It used to be that you worked for a company for 20+ years helping to build it and improve it. And then once you went into retirement, you got a pension in addition to the dividends from the stock that you bought in the company. Now they are finding it to be economically feesable to bribe older workers into quitting or just laying them off outright giving them the opportunity to hire inexperienced young people so that they can pay them less.

i cannot believe it..... After giving me the wrong saw yeasterday, i called them this morning and the guy said that they were getting one in 30 mins. So i go down there to trade it out, anf the guy says how long do i need it, i said probably the day so it was agreed is i brought it back by closing (8pm) it would only be a a 24 hour rental.
got there at 7:30 and brought it in, got the paper work, $124. i said, "I DONT THINK SO!" the guys like why? its $52 a day and $10/hour after 24 hours. i had to explain my story again. if i didnt notice my grandfather would have paid and not even knew.
Next time i will go to lowes even though its farther away
Thanks for shopping at the Home Crapo
