We base our estimates on the force of gravity, and in order to do this, we must assume that the gravitational force remains constant, but most likely this is not the case. in fact, the hollow earth theory makes more sense in many cases. i'll def. get back to you guys about this, i've been researching this topic for a few months now.
Plate techtonic theory proves that the earth is solid, with a molten outercore and a solid inner core - We are the only planet in the solar system with a molten core - the movement of the liquid inside the core but below the mantle is what causes the plates to move around on the surface - giant convection currents if you will.

Plate tectonics is the theory that Earth's outer layer is made up of plates, which have moved throughout Earth's history. The theory explains the how and why behind mountains, volcanoes, and earthquakes, as well as how, long ago, similar animals could have lived at the same time on what are now widely separated continents.
You probably wouldn't recognize the Earth if you could see it 225 million years ago. Back then, all the major continents formed one giant supercontinent, called Pangaea.
Perhaps initiated by heat building up underneath the vast continent, Pangaea began to rift, or split apart, around 200 million years ago. Oceans filled the areas between these new sub-continents. The land masses continued to move apart, riding on separate plates, until they reached the positions they currently occupy. These continents are still on the move today.
Cross-sectional view of Earth, showing mantle, convection currents, and plate motion
Exactly what drives plate tectonics is not known. One theory is that convection within the Earth's mantle pushes the plates, in much the same way that air heated by your body rises upward and is deflected sideways when it reaches the ceiling.
Whatever drives the movement, plate tectonic activity takes place at four types of boundaries: divergent boundaries, where new crust is formed; convergent boundaries, where crust is consumed; collisional boundaries, where two land masses collide; and transform boundaries, where two plates slide against each other.
Even more proof of this theory is that the seabed is alot never than the continents, because that is where the plates are forced apart - allowing new building materials to be pushed up from below the plates.

When I was in high school and they were teaching us about the poles and the earth's axis, one guy thought there was an actual barber pole going through the middle of the planet.
But in all seriousness, I think that there is some sort of monument on the south pole indicating its location because Anarctica is a continent sitting on land. In contrast there is floating ice at the north pole so any monument built would keep on moving. Then I was reading something about how there is the actual North pole and then there is the magnetic North pole that actually pulls the compass slightly past the pole on a wierd tangent making it difficult to navagate up there.

interesting side note... recently scientists have discovered that the earths magnetic poles actually shift every so often. i.e. every 200,000 years. It is theorized that the shift in polarity takes roughly 1,000 years. so i guess 200,000 years ago if you were to use a compass it would point you to the south pole instead of the north pole.
I learned this in my envrironmental science class, scientists dont know why the magnetic poles shift. I just thought it was pretty cool.sigpic

Orbiting over the north pole of planet earth on May 5, (2000) the MODIS instrument on-board the Terra spacecraft, recorded this view of the icecap 700 kilometers below. A radial grid centered on the pole is shown on top of the approximately true color image where each pixel covers about one square kilometer. frozen sea ice appears whitish while open water or newly refrozen ice looks black. An impressive criss-crossing network of cracks in ice shifting above a liquid water ocean is visible, traced by the meandering dark lines.

Yes, there is a geographical north/south pole, and there is also a magnetic north/south pole... and yes they move around... and they even flip over a very long long period of time.
and no.. there is no hole.
