I can tell you I knew I didn't believe in any type of God long before I realized church sucks. Then when I realized the only basis of believing in this God was a piece of shit organization, it didn't take much for me to bail.
I am 50/50 on if the world was created through a natural or evolutionary process, or if there is a supreme being. I refuse to go any further then that, because it's not logical. I believe if it is a supreme being of sorts, it's not the God the Christian Religion is talking about. I cannot believe any part of the religion. No matter what I read or try to believe, my mind cannot do it. I've tried. I'm not going to spend my life trying to believe something my instincts and morals tell me not too. As I said, if I'm going to go to hell for having my own beliefs, so be it, I am totally fine with that. I will not live my life trying to believe something I don't. I have no fear or excitement of whatever afterlife may be in store for me, because I cannot possibly fathom what it would be and it's a waste of time doing so, as nobody, not you, not me, nobody, KNOWS for sure.
Great thread. I hope it's not too late for me to add my thoughts to it...
JGood, I understand what you mean when it comes to "corrupt" churches. One experience that makes my blood boil involves this one church that we ended up leaving. This particular church thought it was necessary to raise $40,000 for this huge projection system for the hymnals so that people wouldn't have to physically open the hymnal books to sing. I wouldn't necessarily call this corrupt, just really fucking stupid. Do you think that $40,000 could have been used for something more beneficial to our community? ... I think so. And, I'm sure there are hundreds of other churches across the United States more worried about upkeeping the facilities they congregate in than the starving people on the streets. Honestly, has Christianity really been that beneficial to the world in its 2000 year history? It seems to create nothing but conflict.
Orphanages, Hospitals, relief and education in Third World countries, etc.
Question for you Christians: Do you believe that Jesus literally rose into the sky, into the clouds, and into Heaven three days after his crucifiction?
Absolutely. What I can't believe is this beautiful world comprised of so many different species and ecosystems was created through a large explosion somewhere in space. Fond memories, the way a mother loves her children, a cold glass of water... not from chaos but from a Master Craftsman whose intelligence and perfection is far beyond the limited understanding of a mere human :D

I guess a good question for you is, what would you put your faith in? You know that humans are not perfect (this includes yourself), so you wouldn't put 100% faith in them. There is something greater out there (it appears that you believe that, just by the way you talk). I don't know how to properly phrase the question I am trying to ask, but it would be something like "what do you think/believe is this greater being?" Still not really phrased right.
Well that sucks, I finally came to an agreement with them guys and you went and fucked it up. Your points are, well, pointless.
How can I put faith in something I don't and can't believe in? And if I don't believe in it, and do not respect or want to be associated with anyone in the church system, that doesn't help. You're missing the core of my argument. I tried and failed to believe in God. I tried for a long time. I'm a very open minded person and will admit when I'm wrong, and my opinion on various things changes often as I learn. However, as every day passes I realize more and more I do not believe there is a God as described in the Christian religion.
Jesus Christ is followed around the world. Great, allow me to jump on the bandwagon with my narrow mind. Wait, the best selling book? It must be correct then! Let me read and believe it because everyone else does.
I'm not going to end my "church is corrupt" rant because it's fucking true and it's harming our society. If let go it's going to get worse. People should be allowed to stand up for what they believe in. If your telling me to sit down and shut the fuck up it's not gonna happen. I'll spread my opinion just as you spread yours.
Ok, I'm sorry. Certain churches may be corrupt. But I dare to say most churches aren't. At least not in my area.
I'm not at all trying to mock you, but go get a New King James version Bible, and just read it with an open mind. (which you may have already done.)

Reading through your posts I really begin to see that your whole hatred, disbelief, etc in God/Christian religion is because of the "corrupt church". I agree with you. There is corruption in the churches becasue there are humans in the churches. I am not saying that all churches are corrupt, but it is definately out there and rampant. The point of this is that we are all sinful. You are not believing, worshiping, etc the church. It is about the belief in God. We are all sinful and messed up beyond belief, and the reason for the church is to be in fellowship with those that are on the same path, per se. We are together to help each other grow through things like discipleship, nuturing, and accountability. I would urge you to change what you are focusing on. If you are looking for perfection in something then look to God, who is the only perfect thing. We all do our best, but cannot attain that becasue we are inherrantly sinful.
Churchs can be very corrupt. I am Roman Catholic, and quasi religious, but I well know that churchs are corrupt and have several hypocrtical points. All churchs are to some extent, its a fact of life. I was always raised to have faith, however, dont take anything too seriously that comes out of a preists mouth, and dont follow everything. Even my father's church, they wanted to kick him out because "he spent too much time with his gf" and since they werent married, he was a sinner! Funny, huh?!
Now I'm gay, so you can imagine all the fun stuff that raises when a religious discussion comes up. Yet I am still quasi religious, I just dont really go to church. But there are many religions that go from tolerant, to plain I am evil and should be dead due to being gay....... even amongst different religions there are differnt churchs that are particularly different or odd in how they conduct things. A good example is my church in town, its Roman Catholic church, however, its extremley liberal and open minded catholic church. By that I mean modern, whereas things are done very easy going and without the whole "guilt" that the catholic religion is known for. Then again, our preist wears Oakleys, and is the chaplain for the fire and police dpets, so I am used to seeing our priest wearing oakleys and a firefighters jacket!
It's a bummer you didn't see your own experience with the church as a positive, or bring you to a place where you felt you got anything from the experience. I felt the same myself at a point, but I never shut the door on God, and in hindsight it was me letting my faith be interupted.
Any solid mind who can influence other people and who Satan can lead from God is a victory for sin.
I know I say stuff that others say "Wow, look how crazy Linus is for his faith" - and I don't mind in the least. I believe everything I say.
Guess I'm just trying to say that you sound like a solid guy, and that if you can't believe the stories in the Bible, etc. - that's cool. I give you respect for being honest and just saying so.
Not everyone can believe all the stories all at once, and that's just fine. I think all God wants is to have a relationship with each person, and just let it grow over time.
A lot of "old timers" forget that walking with God is a "long-term project" - you just have to say the course, and let God's words influence you. You may not hear Him clearly for years (I didn't), but down the line somewhere it works out. Now days, I hear plenty & a lot of the time what I say, or what I type is directed by Him.
Anyhow, I hope you didn't shut the door in general on God, you got a good, solid soul and it would be a shame to not have you in Heaven.
Faith ain't easy in the early days, but it really gets more natural & real over time.
To hopefully finally end your church-system-is-corrupt rant, like someone else said earlier, a church is made up of believers in God, humans. Humans are sinful, myself included of course, and corrupt. No human is perfect therefor, a church could very well be corrupted.
It sounds as though you were putting way to much faith in people at a church, instead of faith in God.
Santa Clause is made up to be what it is now for children - Jesus Christ is followed from all parts of the world, and the Bible is the best selling book ever.
