The local govt here is proposing a plan to issue a complete ban on any pit bull or dog resembling the breed because of all of the trouble caused by this kind of animal.

Regardless of how responsible a dog owner is, people are still likely to make mistakes.

Please stop making comments in this thread. You show a total ignorance of anything remotely dog related, aside from your last sentence that I made sure to quote - just so I could prove another point on responsible ownership.

Aside from that - PLEASE stop spreading mis-information, like the following:

Nothing could be further from the truth. Bulls are stubborn, but the temperment is completely a side of ANY dog you are given complete control of if you have the dog from puppy stage. 1 of my commands is "gentle" - my 4 year old niece can say it, and my dog will NOT take a treat from her hand if she doesn't immediately release, and even then his approach is so slow and gentle, that whatever he bumps with his teeth, he pauses to make sure it wasn't your finger - and he waits to make sure by verbal tone affirmations.

Again you spread gossip, because I highly doubt it ripped the child's leg off, and even if so - are we back to where the 5 o'clock news said it was a 'pitbull', so you just believed them?

Are you aware that Bull breed dogs are the single most common breed out there, thus when you hear statistics that call "pitbulls' the most dangerous breed that they could be completely correct, just on the merit of population?
Also, since we can all agree that a pitbull bite has the capability to be more severe than say, a poodle - that the number of "vicious poodle" attacks that get logged at emergency rooms is less due to that merit.
It's completely possible that there are more vicious breeds out there, but if they lack the stature and size to impose their intents (biting), they can go unrecorded since the victim doesn't go to the emergency room. By that, it's totally possible to have a breed far more inclined to act out, but it isn't being recorded.

Breed specific bans have been tried before, and the basis is really unfounded. Like I just said, Bull breed bites get tracked at emergency rooms, whereas many poodle bites go without a emergency room visit.
Also, speaking as a person who heard the story from the person's own mouth, when his Rottweiler bit him accidentally, when he went to the emergency room for stitches, he told them it was a Golden Retriever that bit him, as they asked the breed of dog that bit him. So I bet plenty of people who say "pitbull" in an emergency room are either lying to protect their own dog, or they know 'pitbull' as an answer due to the sensationalization of them by the media. And then some don't know a "pitbull" from a Boston Terrier, so they say pitbull out of ignorance.

Bottom line, "pitbulls" are the media's favorite right now, and I'd venture a guess that true Bull breeds are responsible for at most, 25% of the attacks they are claimed for. If "pitbull" attack sells, the American media goes with it. If you are foolish enough to just go with it, then feel free to do so.

But please stop spreading so much misinformation. You make it completely clear you are clueless as to these dogs, and you only make a bigger fool of yourself to those of us that are fairly knowledgeable everytime you open your mouth.

Don't ever get a dog, don't even entertain the idea of training seeing-eye dogs for the blind. Your clear lack of understanding of dog mentality, differing dog breeds, and your ignorance to the media's spin on 'pitbulls' makes it clear you really have no business speaking on this subject any further.

I bet 10 years ago when it was "Doberman Pincher" who had the media spotlight, you were down on them too, so please just stop talking. You don't seem to know anything about dogs, so the more you keep talking, the more bad info you keep spreading.

    Seriously, stop.

It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.

Akidas, chow chows, shepards, boxers, dobies, american bulldogs, english bulldogs, stafys and american bull terriers. These are all considerd "bite dogs" in Nor cal. they are banned in most all apartment complexes. I always thought it was funny how misinformed they were. Reading your posts makes me abit uneasy Jscotty. You know absolutely NOTHING about bull breeds, maybe even less about dogs in general.Anyone who says bulls are predisposed to kill and destroy is retarted.
      Yours truly,
