I'm really pissed that my german professor didn't teach us any cuss words.. he promised to by the end of the last quarter, but he forgot. anyone care to share some with the class?

and yeah the translators don't really work.. they lose some of the elegance in the german language, and there's not much there to lose in the first place.. so it comes out kinda robotic :p

I think that if you want to insult someone in German, the translator is perfect. I once attempted to translate, "I don't really speak German, however, I like to pretend that I do." but the German guy that I said this to explained to me that it was insulting. Essentially what I really said (based on the babelfish equivelent) was, "I would rather imitate and mock German speaking people than to actually learn the language."

"Eier" is pretty much balls (as in testicles). It translates to "eggs", but the I dated a German exchange student in high school, and she told me that's what they say for balls.

And it is "fick" for fuck. Apart from that, Rennsport is right, there really aren't many "french" cuss words like we have.

Scheiße really isn't that bad. I hear it all over here in Hamburg, especially after drunken St. Pauli foot ball games.

"Verpiss dich" (piss off or f- off), "arschloch" (asshole), and and "Schlampe" (bitch or slut) are some that I have heard a few times that I wouldn't want to be caught saying.

I don't know if this still holds true, but cursing at a police officer or making rude gestures to others (like road rage on the autobahn) is something you can be fined for. The fines are different depending upon how much money you earn. Back when the Deutschmark was still around someone was fined 8000 DM for giving the finger in Munich. That's nuts.

That's awesome, do you know what Stadtteil or Bezirk he's in? You are right, Hamburg is a nice city. We took a trip to Berlin this weekend and, in my opinion, Hamburg is still a much nice place.

St. Pauli games are fucking nuts, you can always tell when one is going on here because the fans are EVERYWHERE. A lot of them also get ridiculously drunk during the game and then roam around after words. They are not belligerent or anything, and from what I hear they are some of the best behaved fans in the league. My friends were at their first game and it was funny because they heard the drunken singing in English and thought it was mumbled German that they didn't understand. It took them a while to realize that the Germans were actually (trying) to speak English.

Did you ever post pictures of your trip? I seem to remember seeing a thread title with the word Hamburg in it but never looked. I'll do a search...
