pawn stores prey on the unfortunate lower class and cater to thieves. i hate them and would never even walk in the door of one. you may be getting a good deal but at the expense of some poor bastard who cant pay his mortgage or worse yet youre buying that poor bastards tools that some low life stole.

Typically they make the majority of their money on the interest payments from people who pawn some of thier most cherrished valueables. People like that will pawn the diamond ring passed down from their great grandmother or a musical instrument like a guitar that the lead singer from KISS used to own. So they pawn it and make intrest payments for the next 18 months (or so) until they get a significant financial gain and get their stuff back. And as soon as they hit rock bottom, their stuff goes right back in.

But as far as selling stuff to the pawn shop they usually give you about half of the retail value if it is brand new or in like-new condition. They never offer you half upfront but they will usually ask how much you need. So if you tell them something like, "I have to pay my rent today but I don't get paid until next week" then they are probably more likely to give you a bigger loan knowing that you will be coming back for your stuff. But if you go in the door just wanting to sell it for as much money as they will give you, then they KNOW you are despirate and will give you 10 cents on the dollar.

When I owned a construction company and I hired crackheads to work for me, I found many of my "lost" tools in the pawn shop. I even had one guy that I thought I could trust with the charge account. He would sneak in tool purchases while ordering materials and when I finally looked at my reciepts at the end of the month, I discovered that he charged over $5000 worth of power tools that I never saw. He might have gotten away with it because we were spending over 20 times that in materials and supplies (even though he could have been stealing that stuff too) but he kept buying Sawzalls over and over again. The first time I didn't think about it because I am sure they needed one on the demoltion job that we were doing but when 12 reciepts show the purchase of a Sawzall I had to call up home improvement store to see what the heck was going on! So after I got things straighted out with the store and after firing the guy, I went to the pawn shop and saw a shelf full of new tools!

A police officer in town here told me that if you register the serial number of all your stuff you can probably get it back if it goes to a pawn shop because they need to check every item for it being stolen through a database. its a great way of getting things back if they go to a pawn shop.

Yeah.. the problem with that is the items that I register never get stolen and the items that get stolen never get registered. But the last time I had a major theft and filed a police report, the cop told me that if I could so much as describe the item and/or prove that it was mine then they would put it aside and call the police and make arrangements to have my stuff returned. So say that your TV ended up in the pawn shop but you indicate to them that yours had crayon marks all over the screen then you are likely to get it back.

Fuck all that. If there weren't stupid people to easily take advantage of, they would come up with ways to take advantage of all us intelligent people.
