I think we've come full circle on the habits of post-Industrial Revolution America, which is paint anything with a solid surface.
Also consider that back then most things were made of wood and there were not that many "artificial" colors on durable goods. So given the choice of a wooden bench vs. a painted wooden bench, the painted product is more desireable. Just like in today's industry where everything is made of vinal- Fences, decks, bathroom tile, siding, and even cabinetry is now made of vinal. And I am sure that 100 years from now, our decendants are going to ask each other what we could have been thinking.

An old business associate of mine had oak hardwood floors installed when he had his house built and painted them white. Apparently it was supposed to make the room look bigger. Granted the floors looked nice when it was done but there are so many other things that you can do if you want a white floor. The guy said that he likes the look of the white slats and if he ever wanted to go back to the wood grain look, he could sand it down.

I hear you on the novelty of painted finishes back when they WERE a novelty. I'm sure people were sick of natural colored wood, and the bright finish of lead paint drew them in!

My sister in law started a "professional wedding photography business" Bought a expensive ass camera, and started taking pictures. She has never taken any type of class on photography. But what really pisses me off is that she charges a premium price and the pictures look like snapshots that I could take with a $200 cheap-o digital camera. It also sucks that people then have shitty wedding pictures, and really can't get new ones done, it sucks for them. But since you really don't have repete customers in wedding photography she still gets like 4 weddings a month and easily clears 2.5k per gig. :hitler::hitler::hitler::hitler::hitler::hitler:

The foreman for our framing company is running one of those remodels this weekend (I dunno which one).
He said he's done a few, they all look nice on camera but the worksmanship is crap, and they have a whole jobsite to prefab stuff and just throw up finished walls on the house

Even though that's a terrible thing to do to people, most times you will find that there are couples who are scrambling at the 11th hour trying to find a photographer who will do their wedding on short notice. Not that its a good excuse for doing shoddy work but sometimes it cant be helped. And believe it or not, there actually IS repeat business because any time a woman gets married, she has a friend who is about to get married too. So your sister-in-law really does lose out on business if her work is not up to par. Its just that the demand is so high that even a monkey with a Poloroid can clear $1000 a weekend. I hear that the biggest problem in the industry is getting the photographer to even show up. Poor picture quality is ususally the LEAST of problems with wedding photographers.

But overall I understand where you are coming from. I have hired contractors like that to work on my house- They charge me the premium price, charge me extra if the job requires more time to do it and then when its all said and done, the work is average quality. I don't mind paying or paying extra for that matter but I expect the finished product to be superior.

Bah! -- Away with your wise ways! - these days are all about cheap finishing, and quick results. Take your skilled craftsmanship mentality and go somewhere it's appreciated - I don't know where that is, but it isn't Malaysia.

Sort of funny sidebar, but remember when an oval gold foil "Made In China" tag on something meant it was pure crap? Now days you hope the Chinese made it, and it wasn't made in Malaysia, Bangladesh, or the Dominican Republic.

And before that to a lesser degree it was the white tag with red print of "Made in Japan" - when I was a kid, that meant it was too intricate to make in the good ol' UuuuSssAa, but it was marginally passable.

Now days you think you're golden if you get something made in Japanland, like the fact that the 'good' Sony CE products (upper end ES stuff, etc.), or Nikon cameras. Where did we go wrong here in the States?

Seriously, the American made Honda Accords have a higher rate of problems than Jap made ones, and the list goes on...'Yota Tundras, Camrys, and others presently. -- Sadly, some people come into car dealerships and specifically ask for a "J" VIN car, and are willing to wait over taking the exact car with a "1" VIN - this was a semi-regular event when I was a lot lizard working a Honda dealership roughly '90-'91.

I hate ranting, but for some reason crappy design shows, and the myth that they do good work busted, brought all this other stuff to the front of my brain.

It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.

Amazing! I have 10 year old infinity 135 (my beater car) that runs really well with no problems what so ever yet I see other people with the same exact vehicle sitting in the shop. For a long time I thought I was just plain lucky until I went outside just now after reading that post to look at the vin, and sure enough it starts with a J. The original owner probably had the same thinking in mind.

ANYTHING - let me stress that again - ANYTHING envolving weddings envolves a bunch of hacks - they are ALL no talent ass clowns that *can't* do anything else in life. It's the only industry where you can fail at evey job you ever do and still make a living do it - all you have to do is show up. That encludes the minister, the photographer, the "videographer" (BIG BIG no talent ass clowns - I use to have to edit their crappy video and make something of it...) ...NO TALENT ASS CLOWNS!!! ALL OF THEM!

                            (ok I'm done)
