I wouldn't have taken it as far as assimilation into the "culture" - I think it's the language barrier that is the real problem. I'm not calling you out Mariano, I'm just saying - if you break the language barrier look what happens:
-Education is easier
-Education=better employment
-Better employment = more money = reduced crime and poverty in that community
-Finally, it helps break the cycle of generational poverty in the immigrant community

All of this is not only better for the country, but for these people as well. I do not have a statistic to tell how many immigrants attempt to learn the language to a complete capacity vs. the ones that do not, but I can tell you that people who have clearly immigragted to my area of the country and are learning/have learned the language are doing much, much better than those that have not. Getting here should be considdered the dangerous/risky/hard part. Learning to speak the language should be easy compared to that... right?

I agree with much of what you've said in this post, but those jobs you're talking about have traditionally been worked by the descendants of Africans brought over to work as slaves, who are still the poorest people in this country. They are really the ones who have been displaced by this activity. It's true that not many people want these jobs, but as bad as it is, it's still better than not having any job and being poor and broke.

This is the United States of America. English and European classical culture have never had any significant impact here. Our culture is derivative of our folk culture. It is the culture of the masses and not the artistic and aesthetic elite. Country music, blues, jazz and their contemporary manifestations are the dominant influences. It's the culture of radio and TV. English culture is the culture of England and even that's dead. So, should the Hispanics cop to Nashville or the ghetto? Look at your CD collection. You bring up a pretty good point, but the problem is, the Africans are not here demanding that we speak one of their languages or waving African flags around. I guess what I am trying to say, is they are better than that, and are working their asses off also, and not getting the credit they deserve as you pointed out.

I don't know, I get the feeling that half the illegals come here just to work and don't even care to learn english anyway so it's a mute point since govt. even allows it and as previous posts stated who else is going to do some of those jobs... pretty sad.

Okay, you are no longer allowed to vacation anywhere outside the United States.

Do you people not realize that for every "illegal immigrant who makes no effort to learn our language", there are just as many or EVEN MORE legal WHITE americans who make no effort to keep a job or even properly speak english? You want to talk about how wrong it is for spanish people to not speak english... I say it's twice as bad that we have so many people who still cannot spell, use proper grammar, or even use words properly in a basic sentence.

Americans go on vacation and move to countries south of our border every year(more and more in the past decade), and they try very little at all to learn the language of the countries they are living in. They go to the store, and get frustrated when the workers don't speak english... You are in their country now, why don't you speak spanish?

Honestly, it pisses me off beyond belief the ignorance of some people in this country. I was born and raised mostly in the United States, and am of Irish/German descent. But my mother has lived in Costa Rica for the past 4 years, and every time I go to visit I see it more and more. Stupid Americans who think that every visitor and immigrant to the US should know english... But then they wonder why their youth should learn spanish.

Also, lets bring your ignorance to the subject to the forefront. Vacationing in a different company, and sneaking across the broder to have your children because they will automatically be citizens is a whole different ballgame. These illegals (and yes, there are some good), are not coming here to "vacation" yet, are coming here to live and raise their familys. I expect somebody that wants to LIVE in the US to at least learn the language. Period.
