Comp question - how to forcibly remove software?

Got a question about my computer, if someone can help. I got a copy of Norton 2006 from my boss, and I hate it. I want to uninstall it, but everytime I run the uninstall utility from "Add/Remove Programs", the utility locks up just a few minutes into the process, and I have to ctrl/alt/del to end the program because it's stopped responding. I've retried it 3 times, restarting my computer before each new try, and the same thing keeps happening. So what I need to know is how to go in and forcibly hack this software out of my computer, via the registry or whatever other means. Operating system is Windows Xp SP2.

go safemode

I used the add/remove programs once, it didn't lock up, but on my sister's comp it locked up, so I just went in safemode and it was all good.

Go to Symantec.com and download file Norton_Removal_Tool ,exe and/or SymNRT.exe.

Ok... i have the same problem with Mcaffee... except remove isnt even an option under add remove. anyone know of an uninstaller for this

With mcaffe, press ctrl alt delelte, go to "procedures", shut down all the related procedures, then delete the folder, then "start" "run" msconfig and remove the tick mark from al mcafee realted software.

Or reinstall the software with the full installer, then you will have the option of uninstalling it.

And here I was about to write up a howto: on scanning the registry and memory for all semblences of the program and associated dll's. Nice of norton to havea removal tool that works :)

Thank you... i had to install mcaffe when i was in college in order to use their network. one of those stupid rules. But they never installed their uninstaller so I had never known how to get rid of it.

Windows XP has a rollback feature where you can restore your computer to what it was prior to installing the software. For instance, if you installed Norton on June 16th, you can roll your computer back to June 1st and it will be as if Norton ever existed.

Have you tried a computer restore before the time it was installed? System restore keeps all files you have created/downloaded, but it removes any programs you may have installed after the selected restore time.
