Where are all the AK owners at? My buddy just bought a saiga 12 and its made my itch for an AK unbearable so I wanna start doin some serious research into them. Whats a preferred version? I think its obvious that an original Russian made AK will be the most perferrable, but I always see the WASR-10 (romanian?) and think it looks like the best buy of the bunch.

Romanian AK's (WASR10) are generally considered bottom of the heap guns, which is fine, they still shoot and are fun. I don't see myself paying more than $600 for some stamped commie steel anyway (yugo etc). I have a I/O imported AK (center in below pic) and I have no clue where its from, probably a Romanian gun for the price I paid ($300) but it has a couple of features from the "nicer" guns (mag well indents, little shit). Unless you are planning to be uber commando with it, get a cheap one IMO.
Century Arms Golani (Galil copy), I/O imported "AK47C", DPMS basic AR15. Just my go-to rifles in the house.
EDIT
While we are talking about rifles, I think this is going to be the next one I spend big money on:

^ drool. I promise myself I will own one eventually. How does that Galil shoot? What I'm looking for is something that has the modular capabilities of the AR, but the pricing and ease of maintenance of the AK. I figure the AK will never be as accurate as the AR, but I wouldn't mind trying to get it pie-plate at 100 yards accurate..Last edited by CreamE30; 07-31-2010, 10:06 PM.<---Goodnight, sweet prince

AK's and AR's are like apples and oranges man. An AK will make a great plinker (and good for when tshtf) but if you want something with the modular capabilities of an AR, then thats what you need to get. You can get basic AR15's for less than $900 that will make fun weapons and also a great platform to upgrade later on. An AK47 is just an AK47, there is no modular capability there. So again, apples and oranges my friend.
I will get some shit for "hating" on the AK but thats cool. I love my AK and I love the design, its unbeatable as far as reliability and power in an affordable (fun) package.
The Golani is basically a milled-receiver AK in .223/5.56. Century puts different sights on them from the Israeli Galil and they sort of suck to adjust. Not to mention the rear sight is on the dust cover which makes me question my accuracy sometimes. I have a quad rail set up for the Golani (with red-dot) but having a milled receiver it makes the gun so much MORE heavy its no fun to shoot really. I'll deal with the iron sights.
What you have planned for the rifle will also help you find the right one (if you are only buying your first). All my guns have a practical use. I don't own any rifles that will shoot accurately to 1000 metres (this is why I am considering the M1 or similar rifle) and thats OK. I don't have the land (I live in a rural area) to shoot that far for targets, nor would I be justified in killing a person at that range, so that is strictly a range queen type gun, for "show" if you will. Anyone who owns a rifle that will shoot to 1000+ metres and doesn't live in Montana (LOL) has it purely for fun of owning it. Which is cool, I own a few guns for that reason, but don't let someone tell you otherwise, lol.
Bottom line, know what you want before you buy. Regretting a firearms purchase is not a good feeling.1985 RX7 - Badassery Exemplified.

I handled one of these at my local outdoor retailer a few months back when my brother, who is a cop, was looking for a back up gun. Its a bit heavier than the Ruger LCP and Taurus variant and I trust those brands more than I do a nobody like Diamondback. The price wasn't too enticing either compared to the more recognizable brands.
He ended up buying a Taurus .38spl revolver and I'm glad he did. 9mm kurz ftl.1985 RX7 - Badassery Exemplified.

the Diamond does look from that picture like a Glock to me, and I feel bad your boy purchased a Taurus.
You are right for the most part on the AKs. Its really hard to beat a good Arsenal Arms or a Polytech AK!Build your own dreams, or someone else will hire you to build theirs!

Also, that Diamondback does not look like a Glock and its not even remotely related to a glock. Unless you mean its black. Then yes, they look similar, as black DAO handguns.1985 RX7 - Badassery Exemplified.

the Diamond has the same mag release location (just a bit larger), slide release, almost the same 3 pins in its locations. Same hand groves on the slide as the Gen 4, as well as the same material. Same dove tail angle, even same location of the logos.
From that picture BDSAX posted and my 19 right next to me, you could say it looks like family.
As far as guns that are for protecting ones life, Buy only the best and never look back. The metal used in the Taurus has been known to crack. Nothing I would want to happen from my back up gun.Build your own dreams, or someone else will hire you to build theirs!

As far as the "inferior" metals in the Taurus; I remember reading about this maybe 8 or 9 years ago, about some of the guns cracking from heat due to a bad batch of steel. As far as I know those problems were rectified and 99% of Taurus owners could not be happier with their weapons (and their lifetime warranties). This particular Taurus has passed my stress test (as a reloader/hand-loader) and I was impressed with it to say the least. My only real complaint about it was the amount of manufacturing dust I found when we broke it down and cleaned it before its first outing.
I will agree with you 100% about buying the best gun possible. Some don't understand though that it is better to have a "knockoff" (Taurus) than nothing at all. This goes for anyone, not just broke cops, haha.1985 RX7 - Badassery Exemplified.
