Just picked up an AK, Total kick in the pants to shoot!

I was looking at M1A's and they run $13-1500..
Seems like people seem to have been recommending them since they're .223 generally, easier/costs less to shoot, and plentiful! :)
Still love the M1A style but felt it would be prudent to look into an AR.

Ops, I was referring to the AR in the middle of my statement. :)
I like the military style guns and decided to go w. something open sight since most of my shooting w. long guns as a "lad" were .22's, 4-10's, 20/12 gauges. That's why the M1A has been on the radar. Asking one friend who's a gun guy he suggested the AR15 would be able to do all the things an M1A would do and would be cheaper to shoot.
Is it uncommon to use the AR open sighted? Those Aimpoint sights do look pretty slick! ;) I've just decided to go w. something short/medium range for my first that doesn't require a lot of extras.. I can go out in the desert here and shoot 100-200yrds easily anytime.

Yes open sights are the standard, and you have many options for that. I just prefer optics over open as its easier too see what you are shooting at, out there at 400+ yards.

This is one of the biggest reason everyone near great falls is trying to tun him off and get him to sell his spread out there.
