the recessed cylinders that you are talking about are when they would counter bore each cylinder. Some feel that these are of higher quality as far as builds are concerned as the smiths of the day took great care in their work. The latest and mass produced do not have the recessed cylinder due to mass production and skipping the process. But this does not affect the accuracy of the firearm. And not much on the cost either as only collectors might asses a higher value. I have a SW 686 and I love that pistol.

Yes, this is a 4 screw, pinned bbl, I would have thought the cylinders would be counter bored on that vintage. It's an M & P, predecessor to the Mod 10. I recollect S&W stopped recessing some cylinders in the mid 90's. I had a couple of 642's: one had the pinned bbl and recessed cylinder, also had the pinned extractor. The other was a later model without those features and had the eccentric style extractor.

I'm not concerned at 38spl pressures. The counter boring was to provide a little more case support and probably isn't needed here. I just thought it was that way on all the old ones.

I was under the impression that SW stopped doing that in the early 80's. You can check their site and find out what year your pistol was made and go from there. Revolvers are some of my favorite firearms. Try to get to the range and give us a field report :)

Glock 22 with a 9mm barrel in it that has support for a supressor. Hell of a gun to shoot.

            What barrel do you have?

            I want a 9mm barrel for my 23

              fwiw here's a couple observations-

-the Military and Police model never had recessed cylinders. you won't find them on the 642 models either; you must be mis-remembering. reference Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson by Supica and Nahas.

-recessed cylinders were found on rimfire and magnum revolvers only, discontinued in 1982. ibid

-642's were introduced in 1990. ibid

-if those grips are really made of Goncalo Alves and not walnut they are the ultra-elusive K frame "Coke" bottle grips. even in the shape pictured, worth way more than the revolver itself. when viewed from the rear, "Cokes" pinch in at the top, expand in the middle then pinch in again near the bottom. hence the Coke bottle reference.

They wouldn't like the 5" fixed blade I'm attaching to the new roll cage in the jeep then? :D sure Indiana kinda sucks sometimes but I can carry a Damn pocket knife without someone calling a SWAT team on me!

It's funny because a lot of places are way less strict about fixed blades then they are about folders which seems kind of retarded to me

I wasn't sure about the recessed cylinders on the 642, my recall isn't what it used to be.

The grips probably are the old coke bottle ones, I'll post up some better pics later. I forgot about Supica and Nahas, I used to be more up to date on this stuff.

Thanks a bunch for the info!

Not the coke bottle grail. Must be walnut, I just assumed they were Goncalo Alves because of the size.

still a very cool revolver. enjoy shooting it- even if those aren't cokes they still have the desireable diamond escutcheons.

the earlier target stocks are also less bulky than later.

I want a Glock 22 so very badly. Of course I need the .357sig and 9mm barrels to go with it. :|

That glock above is my uncles. He swears by the .40 > 9mm conversation. It fires so nice. He has a supressor for it too. Its quite bad ass.

I'm but a poor college student with a concieled wepons permit but no weapon.

I don't really see the point of buying a Glock 22 to run 9mm in it all the time. I just like the option because the ammo is cheaper for when I just feel like shooting shit.
