      This.

I recently bought a sig sauer 1911 ultra compact for concealed carry and am extremely pleased with it. I'm a long time 1911 fan and wanted to stay with that platform since I'm comfortable with it.

I found that my full sized 1911 was too balky and awkward for me to be comfortable concealing it, so this gun was the answer to that issue. It came standard with night sights and has a nice trigger pull. My main beef was with the grips not being very comfortable.

Over all, if you consider going the 1911 route and intend to carry. I highly suggest sig sauers compact line.

I want a 1911 bad but all the lower end models have cheap finishes on them.

Going to wait until I have a grand or so to drop before going the 1911 route.

A buddy of mine has a Dan Wesson bobtail, he spent a small fortune on it but the pistol is perfection.

I'm with you on this. I love the way 1911's shoot but the ones I want are pricey (*cough* Sig *cough*)

I love my 1911 and think everyone should own at least one, but I don't know too many people that would hold it in such high regard as far as reliability is concerned.

Im a total noob when it comes to specs and models but i've always gone shooting with my father and friends in safe, legal environments since i was a child and so i know how to operate and fire a pistol proficiently. Im not looking for a pea-shooter but not a .44 magnum either. I'd like something with some heft while maintaining mobility. My hands are larger so nothing tiny but i also want to be comfortable when wearing it holstered.

              Suggestions?
I'd suggest M&P, XD/XDm, and Glock. The ones with the ~4" barrels are perfect for what you are describing. Go to a range and try them out. I have a 1911, but it is really heavy and the capacity is about half of what you could get in a lighter smaller framed polymer gun. My carry gun is a XD Subcompact in 40.

              I have a SR1911 and love it.

Also think about this, heaven forbid you actually have to use that gun. Guess what, that gun gets taken by the police and filed as evidence. And do you think that a $3k gun will come back to you in the same condition that they took it from you? Also, what are you going to carry in the mean time?

I agree, everybody should at least have one in their stable. But I wouldnt use it as my main carry gun.

And if you are wanting all of the safeties; you need more training.

I know a good number of the cops that work my area from back when I was working at a shitty apartment complex as security. They told me all the time I should be carrying lol. I was talking to one and said "I don't have the armed security license." He said "so get something that fits in an ankle holster"

Capacity and weight is the biggest issue with carrying a 1911. Also: if it's not chambered in .45 it's not a real 1911 ;)

This. I carry a Glock 23. I have bigger hands too and it fits just right in my hand. The Springfield XDM is nice too, I owed a full sized one of those and it carried pretty well, but I carried that OWB. Not a big fan of the M&P series at all, but a lot of people like them.

In CA 1911 is king. We can't have more than 10rd, so what better gun than a 1911? I have my beauty 1911 that I stroke and lube, and the beater 1911 that I don't give a shit about. Neither of them has ever had a FTF in my possession.

WTF is happening up in here? Are we seriously suggesting a 1911 as a first gun AND a carry gun? Look, I know it's possible and people have done it for...well over a hundred years I guess. Really though, there are so many better options for a concealed carry/home defense pistol. Any of the major brand polymer striker fired handguns are reliable and easily concealed. There are several major considerations when making the decision, in order of importance. Reliability, capacity, thickness, grip length, weight and cost. Personally I like the M&P Shield (own one), Springfield XDS and Walther PPS.

I was looking for an MP Shield when I picked up the LC9.

I am quickly falling in love with my LC9, haven't even shot it yet but it's small, light, and still a 9mm.\

Either way, don't worry so much about getting the "perfect" gun as a first one. Because it won't be long and you will have another, and another, and another. There is no "one size fit's all".

The lc9 goes out with me. The .40 now stays in my night stand.

Dumb question but can you carry a sawed off double barrel shot gun?
