just bought my first 'L' lens

I just picked up my first Canon 'L' lens, the 70-200mm f/4 L. I love it! super fast and silent focus, good size, amazing image quality. I've got a 1.4x Kenko TC on order, that should go very nicely with it too! next up is a monopod and beanbag, handholding that thing and trying to get steady shots could be a challenge. I wanted IS, but it's twice the price and I can't afford that right now :( I'll take it to PIR next track day and get some shots to post up in the forum.

people think you're a pro with a big white lens, i like the idea of IS too, thats why I am eyeing a pentak k10d which has the IS built into the body, so you can buy cheaper glass and still have IS.

What's this "L" all about? I've seen a few people toss that around without a single clue of what it meant.

I am going to rent it next week to see how I like it. Have you tried 70-200 F/2.8 before purchasing F/4 ?

No I haven't tried it. I ruled it out due to size/weight/PRICE. I think I would rather have the f/4 IS for $900 than the f/2.8 non-IS for $1100.

'L' stands for 'Luxury'; it's their pro series of lenses. Some (like mine) cost about $500. Others cost about $10,000. But if you see a white lense or a black lense with a red stripe around the end of the barrel, it's an 'L'

IS is only good for some situations, I wouldnt want it all the time unless there where multiple settings for it.

L lens' are Canon's best offering, they all have better build materials, weather sealing, best optics, and cost a lot of money.. The all have a red ring at the end but there are third party lens companies doing this to get people to buy.

Didn't know you can purchase a 4IS for 900!!! Last time I looked F/4 non IS was 600-700. F2.8 is good though ;)

Great buy nontheless. Post some pics when you have time.

Personally the 2.8 is worth the little extra cash. Sharper, faster, and the smooth creamy bokeh is stellar. The weight isnt that big of a deal, I hand held my 70-200 2.8L that entire lemons event this weekend.

Careful, that L fever is a bad sickness.. haha good buy

IS, dont dwell on it. Ive never been in a situation where I wish I had bought the IS version. Especially in motorsport..

Craigslist is GOLD for this stuff. I got mine for $475. There is a f/2.8 IS for sale in P-town now for $1400.

                              f/4 IS for $880:

                              f/4 non-IS for $490
