If you watch these episodes and read the actual transcripts, most of these guys have the emotional maturity of a 14-15 year old boy. Most of them are late 20-early 30something losers living in their parents house. They were probably losers in HS, make shit for cash, and have nothing to offer a regular woman. I've read enough of the "dirty talk" in these transcripts, and damn, it sounds like I did when I was 13, it's cringeworthy.

That being said, I think the whole operation bases itself on these guys being too ashamed, stupid and poor to get real legal representation. I honestly think that if a lot of these guys lawyered up, they'd get off. They recently had a deal down in Texas where the judge threw out a bunch of these cases from one of the dateline episodes, just based on the transcripts which really border on entrapment in a lot of the cases. It's essentially roleplaying between two consenting adults, albeit which a sad-sack fuckjob on one end.

You hit the nail on the head! I don't think that you could have said it any better.

Technically it is entrapment even though there is really nothing else that you can do to catch guys like this without endangering a child. Its a catch-22 from many different angles because you can't deputize a minor child into law enforcement and if you use an adult as a decoy, technically there is no crime committed. Generally laws can only be enforced once they have been broken even though many states have been wrestling with the issue of preventative detention for years.

There are advocates working to get the laws changed to where you can be convicted if you get caught with your hand in the cookie jar even though there are no cookies.

Ok, took the test, got an F.

                but at the bottom read:

2,129,112 FBI agents have thanked me for raising awareness on some of their most wanted fugitives.

Are there really that many FBI agents ????? :o

Nope. Not at all. How then could they have had the same guys show up more than once - and in the second instance, it WAS WHILE HIS FIRST CASE WAS PENDING? Hence, no deals were made.

I dont doubt that some of these are borderline entrapment situations. The problem is, the defendant has to show they were enticed into activity that they optherwise would not have engaged in. Judges who have to run for re-election are loathe to be sympathetic to that creepy guy who was lurking in the pre-teen chat rooms wh osays he wasn't trolling for some kind of thrill. The voting public in most places wouldn't be too thrilled with a judge who lets these guys off. Not saying it won't ever happen, but . . .

Maybe in some jurisdictions, but many states have passed laws that make the attempt to do this a crime in and of itself.

Charlie, pay close attention here: ;) In Ohio, the decoy has to be a cop. Thus in order for the Perverted Justice folks to do anything here, they'd have to be deputized.

                  From Ohio's Importuning statute:

                  (C) No person shall solicit another by means of a telecommunications device, as defined in section 2913.01 of the Revised Code, to engage in sexual activity with the offender when the offender is eighteen years of age or older and either of the following applies:
                  (1) The other person is less than thirteen years of age, and the offender knows that the other person is less than thirteen years of age or is reckless in that regard.
                  (2) The other person is a law enforcement officer posing as a person who is less than thirteen years of age, and the offender believes that the other person is less than thirteen years of age or is reckless in that regard.
                  (D) No person shall solicit another by means of a telecommunications device, as defined in section 2913.01 of the Revised Code, to engage in sexual activity with the offender when the offender is eighteen years of age or older and either of the following applies:
                  (1) The other person is thirteen years of age or older but less than sixteen years of age, the offender knows that the other person is thirteen years of age or older but less than sixteen years of age or is reckless in that regard, and the offender is four or more years older than the other person.
                  (2) The other person is a law enforcement officer posing as a person who is thirteen years of age or older but less than sixteen years of age, the offender believes that the other person is thirteen years of age or older but less than sixteen years of age or is reckless in that regard, and the offender is four or more years older than the age the law enforcement officer assumes in posing as the person who is thirteen years of age or older but less than sixteen years of age.

You know, I can't put my finger on it, but there is something wrong with that show.

I'm glad they are doing it in a way. But part of me thinks it's really playing on the fears of women (kinda like how even fat/ulgy chicks sit around worrying about getting raped), and it's just an all around replacement for the old circus freak show.

                      Not to mention this:

                      Dateline Sting Leads to Suicide:

Besides, I can bet you that in the time a hour-long episode of "predator" airs, there are way more teen-aged girls getting molested by dad/uncle/grandfather then they film all season. How about doing something about that? That is WAY more damaging to a young girl.

Funny you say that- My secretary is very fat and very ugly and when she leaves the office late at night I offer to walk her to her car but she says, "Oh, that's ok. NOBODY bothers fat people!"

One thing that makes a TV program successful is the RATINGS. Thats why news organizations tend to show more bad news than good news. And even though the producers at NBC would have you believe that they are doing a good deed by reporting this story, they wouldn't show it if they didn't think anyone was going to be interested in watching it. So even as it relates to the REAL and MORE SERIOUS problems when it comes to crimes against children, they are not as interesting to the public. Could NBC sell a story about a girl being molested by her grandfather? Maybe. But catching some creepy 40 year old who works at the video store in a sting operation is much more interesting.

We are so blood thirsty when it comes to seeing bad people going down that we sit there and say, "Yeah! Give that bastard the chair! OK WHOSE NEXT?" but we wouldn't be so dogmatic when it comes to a family member and seeing everyone else that gets hurt in the process. Nobody wants to see grandpa get the chair for touching his granddaughter inappropriately... but the 30-something creepy looking jerk- YEAH! GET EM!

That too! It's all about what's "in the now" stemming from society's current collective viewpoint on an issue.

Another illustration, The Netherlands' current age of consent is now 15!!!! Yes fifteen years old. Some years ago this would be unacceptable in that same Dutch society

I will admit that these shows do get my attention cause I like to see these guys being dealt with. Also the intrigue of seeing just how being a predator transcends persons of all professions etc.
