As for the Firefox vs. Internet Explorer thing... The reason Firefox *was* said to be safer was because less people used it, therefore less "cyber criminals" developed browser hijacks for it. Now that probably 30%-40% of the population uses it, it can be considered equally as safe as IE. Both have loopholes, and can be fixed by stepping up security, which makes browsing a PITA.
Firefox offers browser add-ons, very cool little things that you can download to make your browsing experience better. The newest version of IE was tested to be just as quick as Firefox. I find that Firefox is quicker for my purposes, especially when I have 10+ tabs open.
Opera is still the fastest IIRC, and has many more cool add-ons then the other browsers, including a notepad that saves to the page you are viewing, so next time you view the page your notes show up in a little window. But I just never really caught onto using it for some reason.
Download it, give it a try. You'll have to use it for a few weeks to get the hang of it and decide if you like it or not.Comment

No, this is incorrect. It is true that at the beginning Firefox was considered to be safer because it was more obscure than IE, but there are much stronger reasons why many believe that Firefox is still superior than Microsoft's Internet Explorer. As for the Firefox vs. Internet Explorer thing... It is true that more vulnerabilities will exploited as they are discovered, but Mozilla and the Firefox developers quickly respond to these threats. Fixes and product updates are issued frequently - on average the problems are fixed much faster than Microsoft produces similar patches for IE.
Firefox has a vigilant open source community standing behind it, and, in turn, the time it takes to fix any issues with the browser is minimal.Comment

my answer it to stay away from shady e-mails and shady websites, and if a problem occurs where you think you may have viruses, I say format and reinstall the operating system. For protection, use a free antivirus, avast or something, and keep out of sites you never heard of. I work at a Geek Squad, I get "computer bugs" 10-20 times a day, in different flavors. I say 90% come from limewire and other sharing programs. I highly recommend against using those.
Have any more questions, I'd be willing to share the experience I have, just PM me.Comment

to add to what kommisar said, firefox is simply better because its open source. the program is like a living organism, if you keep up with the newer versions, it will benefit you. because the open source community is so large, it benefits because of all the changes it undergoes.
as for microsoft, you are basically held at their mercy until they decide to change something/make a new release.Comment

I understand, but Microsoft also employees a staff of extremely well paid people, and due to other corporate income, can afford to spend more research and development on the product. It's not like using IE is a risk. That said, I still use Firefox because it's open source and I do prefer that route, for the reasons you mentioned - shorter update intervals, wide variety of people developing the product, etc...
But I won't put IE down, because in reality, security is too broad a term to say one browser is more secure then another. Each browser has pro's and con's, and each individual should ideally pick the browser that better suits their needs. IMO, it's a matter of opinion. But my opinion is often wrong...Comment

make sure your default website is set to www.google.com and not some google like website.
download, install and run the following:
spybot search & destroy
adaware
and then run TRENDMICRO house call

Hey -
I somewhere along the line on the internet got a fricking bug that redirects all my Google searches - I don't know how to look for the program that got in my computer, so if any of you tech savvy guys could help me out & give me a few pointers here, I'd appreciate it.
If I 'copy - paste' the true web address into the bar, I'm fine - but if I click the header for the results of a search it redirects me to their crap.
It even shows up in the dropdown of my search as a 'redirect' in between my google search and the address it took me too.
Anybody know what I got going on here - it's finally driving me nuts.Comment

umm like 99% of the population?
My editing rig is my bread and butter, so I HAVE to protect it. But for most people it's just a computer. You shouldn't have to be a expert to use it. Just back up your important stuff, do as suggested about, and go ahead and surf porn all day long.Originally posted by Matt-Bhey does anyone know anyone who gets upset and makes electronics?Comment

Thats the MAIN reason why you don't put your editing computer on the internet or use it as your "multi-purpose" computer. Use it for just editing and thats it. Then go get you a cheap used computer for about $150 and use it or surfing porn, myspace, keygens, and free movies.umm like 99% of the population?

While this is well & good, if I was a "good little boy", I probably wouldn't be looking at porn, and that's more than likely where I bet the virus or whatever came from.
Am I going to quit looking at porn? Not likely. So a good antivirus is needed, because it seems sex, either real or computer, gets you a virus.
Thanks to all who have given me a helping hand here - I really do appreciate it. So far, so good on the fixes.
I'm going to stick with IE for now, since a good point was made about sellling a car if the alternator went bad, or something like that.
I didn't have anything other than the firewall in my router for over 18 months, and while it was a good run, it was time to buy a good virus program.
I'll be trying a few of the fixes you posted too, worthybrother, and if I hit any snags I'll be sure to PM you. Thank you.
It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.Comment
