    People are just plain STUPID!

It was a nice day today so I decided to take the E30 out for a ride (since I had not driven it all week) and I was about to make a left turn from the "left only" lane when I started smelling anitfreeze and saw a big cloud of steam come up through the hood. The temp needle was pegged hard into the red zone so I shut the car off to see what happened. Sure enough the lower radiator hose burst and sprayed coolant all over the engine! No problem. I decided to let the car cool down and then I would be able to run it just long enough to get the car across the street and into the parking lot. Now.. here we go-

Supid people incident #1- When the left blinker is on, that indicates that I am making a left turn, right? RIGHT. And the same is true for the right blinker. But apparently people don't understand what it means when BOTH blinkers are on at the same time. I turned on my hazzards while waiting for the car to cool down but sure enough people started stacking up behind me waiting for the light to change. The light turned green and the people behind me started blowing their horn. Some people were intelligent enough to get the idea and they politely drove around me but there were plenty of bone heads who drove up right behind me and waited while it didn't occur to them that I had my HAZARD lights on! One fool even blew his horn for a minute continously while behind me and then he drove around me and stopped beside me while leaning on his horn. So I smiled and waved to the guy and said, "Hey, Steve! Long time no see!" as if I thought the guy was one of my friends.

So finally I am brave enough to start the car and drive it into the shopping center parking lot, I find a good space away from everyone else and layed out on the ground to see if I can just stick a splicer in the hose and get on down the road. (I always keep a hose repair kit for situations like this) and because it was more of a split than a hole in the hose, I had to cut out a 1-inch section in order to make a good repair. I had to pull the hose a little bit in order to get it to fit on the nipple so I was under the car wrestling with it for a little while. This leads to the next 2 stupid people incidents.

Here I am laying on the ground; The E30 in one space, my legs extending out to the adjacent space- Some fat cow of a woman drives up to me and starts blowing her horn. I ignore her until she gets out of the car and says, "Excuse me sir, could you slide out of the way so I can park here?" Now there are over 300 spaces in this parking lot, and less than half of them are full. WHY MUST SHE PARK NEXT TO ME? So I really wanted to tell her off but her kids were in the car and what I had to say would have been too inappropriate. So I politely explained to her that I had a major mechanical breakdown and then she was more understanding.

Not long after that, another fat cow woman comes along asking me for directions. I say, "Not right now, I got my hands full" but then she got beligerant and demanded, "why won't you help me?!" I guess it didn't occur to her that having my arms buried up to the elbows in my e30 made it not a very good time to ask for directions.

    Yea, that sounds about right.

Sometimes I think I am the only one who is mentally checking with myself asking "am I the a-hole?"

where did you go driving? where did you end up?

i find that (in general when it comes to driving) people are less retarded the further away from city life.

Dam dude. You're just lucky the fat cow of a woman LOOKED before pulling into the space you had your legs in, instead of just whipping into it and running over your legs!

Definately true. I live semi-country area back her in Toledo. When I go back to Columbus for school, its like I entered a world of idiots, full of old lady drivers and I swear 9 out of 10 girls are on cellphones.

Actually I was driving in Crystal City near the Costco and Best Buy. Oddly enough, I find the folks inside of the city to be more intellegent, patient, and understanding. I think what makes DC percieved as being "rude" when it comes to drivers and driving is that there is unwritten yet understood rule that if you need to get over into my lane, then make your way over when its reasonibly safe to do so. If you wait for my permission to let you over, then you might not get in. Secondly if you do jump in front of someone you better GO. If you had to cut in front of me at the last second, you better make it worthwhile. If you cut in front of me and then say, "errr ummm.. where do I want to go?" then you are going to get screamed at. If you cut in front of me making me slam on my brakes, you better haul ass like your life depended on it so at least I think you have a good reason to be in a hurry.

But going back to STUPID people, I forgot to mention the few looky-loos that came by to inform me that there was a puddle of anti-freeze leaking from my car. "oh, you don't say! I guess while I am lying down here relaxing under my car with greasy hands I think I will check that out pal! Thanks for the tip!"

My experience with overheating was a little more relaxed.

See, this is the way it works: When you get off work early, SOMETHING is bound to go wrong that will spoil the rest of the time off. Happened on the same day I will discuss, and when my 325is ate the oil pump. Just got off work, almost home, 3 day New years time to chill and kick back...just rounded the bend to a straight on a back road and just about to gun it up to 6500RPM. And the red light came on. >.<

Anyways. So I got off work at 14:30 instead of staying till 18:00 or so. Drive around looking for this automotive place (still didn't know my way around town much) and the battery light came. I knew exactly what it was, I swapped the 90A alternator instead of the 80A (older cars have those, this was a '85 325e) and it was slightly inclined in the wrong direction. Soooooo that means it would flip the belt, no matter how much you tightned it.

20 miles later, the belt broke. I had no spare belt, so that means I was 3 miles from home (not bad) with no alternator belt. Okay so the engine can cool down but the battery doesn't charge back up. Pooo. So begins the slow process of driving about 3/4 of a mile before it gets into the red zone. Shut the engine off (stoplights weren't helping either, damn them) and cruise until I stopped. Emergency flashers on.

Each time I would have to wait *sigh* (you'll understand when you have to do it) 40-50 minutes for the engine to cool down. Nothing interesting to do in the meantime...like chat with your chick in the car or something.

Hey man, if you ever venture into PG county, MD, more specifically Hyattsville and Langley Park, you'll witness some of the worst drivers on the planet. The cab drivers that park in the middle of the road, or drive 2 mph (literally), all the drivers without licenses, cops that go well above the speed limit, no turn signals, no sirens unless its a red light, etc..., black cars with no lights on, people driving with no bumpers or half of the front clip torn off. It's a LOT of fun.

route 1 through crystal city? at the wrong time of day that SUCKS...so crowded...hell it's crowded almost any time of day

it seems that everywhere i drive i'm surrounded by idiots. i was at that costco saturday and witnessed a woman in a jeep (of course) with a shredded front left tire, still driving back and forth wondering why it was difficult to move. i was going to help her, but i'd rather get the shopping done. we went in, spent well over and hour getting our shit and come back out to see a random guy putting the spare on while she was sitting in her car.

she was only 50 yards from the costco tire center too!!!!!!

I live right beside Hyattsville just on the other side of the DC line. I have never seen bad drivers over there except for late at night when people are coming out of the strip club half-drunk. You are probably describing Landover. They have some really bad drivers over there doing the same stuff you described.

But that parking lot at Costco is ALWAYS crazy. Unless I have a LOT of stuff to get, I will take the train down there and bring my rolling grocery cart.
