A bank is credible. A bike shop is not. Think money and resume. Suck it up and do the work. Also, banks offer health insurance if you don't already have it. This is coming from someone who worked at a skatepark for years.

Also consider looking into tuition reimbursement if you work for a significantly large institution. I worked for a very large bank in college, and they paid for 1/2 of my tuition.

On the other hand, my job at the bank required my full attention, the entire time, and the last thing I felt like doing at the end of the day was homework. Is your boss at the bike shop flexible? Cool with you doing homework while sitting at the register sometimes? Is the job fun enough that it doesn't feel like a job? You might be able to focus on school better if you're not constantly stressed out about work. There will be other opportunities for summer internships here and there. I wouldn't stress too much about your next "in"

What would I do? If I thought I could survive on $7.50 an hour, or I though I could weasel a raise out at the bike store, I'd stay there. At the end of the day, school is the most important thing. Leave your worries about what to do after school for when that time comes. Remember, you'll have a degree and you will have real world experience already, there will be opportunities for you, and you won't have to work your way from the very bottom like you'd be doing if you stayed at your current company.
boss at the shop is VERY cool, def flexible too. the bank is making my schedule a month in advance, and as such is requiring me to declare my military obligations too about 2 months in advance. pretty stringent on scheduling.

Word, the bank could be called an internship. All internships involve bitch work.

But its a big rubber stamp on the resume.

He's an econ major. Being a teller at a bank isn't going to do anything for him. I guess you can call anything an internship now a days, but unless you can advance within to something with more meaning, it's not going do anything for him. We have college drop outs and foreigners that barely speak english as tellers around me.

So, unless you can obtain something with more responsibility within the bank, don't expect an employer to pick your resume out of a stack because of this "internship".

I have a DoD TS clearance because I work as a network admin down at my base, but its very part time, as Nat'l Guard is once a month type of deal until we get called up.

Let us back up to the root of things- Why are you majoring in economics? What exactly do you want to do with that major? You stated earlier that you want to become a day trader which is all well and good, but you don't need a degree in order to do that.

Keep the job at the bike shop. If I needed to hire someone with your education and expertise, I would be more apt to hire someone who has over a year of work experience dealing with people who spend money. By working at the bike shop you know who spends money, what they spend it on, and why the spend it. You see first hand as to how people ponder how they will spend their money. Even though this is just a bike shop, it is a direct indication of how people decide to spend their money in other areas of their life.

If you ever saw the movie "Big" with Tom Hanks, there is a part of the movie where the owner of the corporation goes to the toy department of one of his stores to observe the customers and he says to Hanks' character, "You can't see this on a marketing report".

Working in a bank on limits you to what people are depositing and withdrawing. You will never have a clue as to what people are actually doing with the money.

Are you seriously using a Tom Hanks movie to justify a life decision?

Although you are right about the econ degree. I worked with a few econ majors in retail when I was 16. Its not a very powerful degree.
