WTF is this? (insect content)

I was at the car wash the other day, washing my eta for some reason, and I walk over to the change machine and see this "thing" in the corner and almost shit myself. So what is it exactly? It looks like some furry-ass huge-bodied butterfly. Anyone ever see anything like it?

I saw that when I went down to visit my mom. The fucking thing was 4" long. It was dying in the road (not smashed, just acting like it was weak) so I picked it up and moved it into a yard under a tree. Figure at least it could die (or recover) in the shade.
