I definatly agree that if you can fight a war and vote, you should be able to drink. However, lowering the age will make getting alcohol easier for high schoolers, and I speak from experience when I say that isn't a good thing.

Wisconsin has a law that allows people aged 18 and up to drink with adults (not sure if they have to be parents) at restaraunts and the like. That's a pretty good law imo.

Haha, I know right? But it's true, whoever wants to drink, will drink. So get drunk.. and high. :finger:

As far as my opinion on lowering the drinking age, it doesn't matter. Really, any kid any age can get a drink. There's so many liquor stores around my hood that don't even check iD. I mean, I'm 19 and they don't ask me. But we all know there's 13 year olds out there that look like old men. If that law went into effect, I could imagine all the kids thats still going to turn 18 get all excited.

I like the drinking age right where its at, even though I'm not 21. There are too many kids my age that I don't think should be drinking any more than they are now. Lowering the drinking would just make alcohol even easier for highschool kids to get and cause more problems. This would also mean that underage drinking would start 3 years younger. Most kids don't start drinking much until their senior year of high school, with a lower drinking age it would most likely be their freshman year of high school.
Then you didn't see my highschool. When I was a senior, I remember hearing of freshman and sophmores who were alchoholics already, one even got booted from being class president because he got busted.... then again, I went to a private school, most of the kids I went to school with had LOADED parents and BAD connections to more loaded people....

The legal drinking age here in Australia is 18 (i think it might be even lower in some states),
I think by the time you are 18, you should be considered responsible for yourself. After all there are plenty of 18yo responsible for our countries.

On a side note, how do you guys get by from the age 16/17 to 21!?
What an earth do you guys do? I'm 18 myself and i find me and my friends (1st yr university) go out at least twice a week, do you guys have underage clubs? or just go to a shit load of house parties?
Underage clubs here are fucking lame. I imagine its no different in USA
I do miss the days of house parties, As soon as we hit uni, there were all most none, everyone here just goes out on the town to hit the piss.

I think 21 is too long to wait to hit the pubs/clubs. And as for fake id, thats all ok for 16/17yo here, but i imagine there's few that could pull off 21...

I was more concerned about getting my drivers license when i turned 18,
I guess you guys are lucky in that regard...

I got off with a reduced sentence of reckless driving. I know I was a dumb shit, and I feel very lucky, but in reality I should not have escaped so easily.

And I have mixed feelings about drinking age. I know that at 18 I was not responsible enough to be drinking alcohol even though I was. And yes, three years later things have changed significantly.
move to AZ then, i am pretty sure they are the stiffest in the country! they just made it even worse too, ZERO tolerance..that means ANY booze in your system you are a goner, & first time offenders have to get a breathalyzer ( ignition disabilizer) installed in their car for $1500 and pay $100 a month for 1 YEAR to have it monitored.
by the time you pay for all your alky classes, AA meetings (mandatory BTW), fines , and reinstatement of your licence it is about $10k. that is with out getting a lawyer!! they really don't do you any good here any more, the judge just nails you to the cross, no questions asked. you also now have a min 30 days in jail too!!!

none of this seems to be deturing people from drinking and driving either, although i know it does me, i may go out and have a few over the evening if i am driving, but never drunk or even buzzed, it is just not worth it. i would loose my job at the dealer and couldn't get another one at any dealer since the insurance wont cover people with DUI's.

BTW i am 35, never had a DUI, but just about everyone i know has, so from first hand knowledge i can tell you it is a bowl of no fun!!!!

Wow, that is really harsh. Almost TOO harsh. I would totally approve such a punishment with a .06-.08 limit on the second offsense for example. Then the third, automatic jail for a year, and no license for 2-3 years. My friend thinks on the third you should be killed. LOL I reserve that for the 4th offense. :D (i'm kidding about the killing part....)

Leave the drinking age alone - make it 21 to enlist. If you are going to give an arbitrary age to deem people fit to make real decisions, then let's err on the high side rather than the other.

It seems more tragic when I hear of a soldier who dies in-country & is less than 25, can't say why I think that way - just always strikes me a little more.

It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.

For 10k you can hire lawyer to get you off the charges too .... If caught with a DUI refuse all sobreity tests !!! Refuse to blow in a breathalyzer(?) and say not unitl your lawyer is present. By this usually it is late in the evening when you are caught and since it will be the next day before your lawyer could be present that more than likely you would not test drunk. Also make sure you have the very best lawyer money can buy that is known to get people out of dui charges.... more likely than not you will get off with anything serious other than driving school or something like that... Granted it still costs the same but you will not have the record showing a dui.... And a real good lawyer will keep putting this off until statue of limitations is up as well

I don't like the argument "If 18 is old enough to vote and die for your country why cant you get a drink"

reason is: The drinking age is 21 so that people will drink at 18. its simple, when a substance is as readily available and the punishment is so light it is expected that people will drink underage.

No I agree with you on the age but it basicly comes down to a maturity level and the law makers feel that 20 and under just do not make good and sound judgements to drink something that impairs their judgement... and honestly alot of 21-26 y/o's could fall into this category as well from the ones I have known anyways.....

If they really felt that way then a MIP would be more than a little $200 ticket.
