Need to rebuild my home speakers... where to get parts?

*Finally* setting up my home stereo. I blew my speakers years ago from rocking waaaay too hard. Now, they work but are scratchy above 1/4 throttle.

What is my best bet? should I rebuild my speakers, essentially utilizing the housing, and put in new components? or should I just ante-up and buy a decent set of used speakers?

I am looking for the least expensive way to get a NICE set of speakers. I am OK with using used components.

    suggestions?

These are your typical white van speakers, so, I am not planning on re-using any of the components currently in the speakers. I do like the look of the housings though, and they are a good fit for my living room.

oh ya, each speaker has 12" sub, 4"? mid, and a tweeter.
    thanks!

where is the best place to get highest-quality used speakers or parts?

The speakers are usually matched for the enclosure. You'll be hard pressed to find some raw drivers that will work well for it.

I'd check craigslist for a new pair.

What amp are you running to them? That's most likely the culprit for the damage to the speakers.

PS - Thanks for the bolts! I had to take the fucking caliper and rotor off to put em all in ...grrrr haha

just find you some used ones on craigslist or ebay within your budget. I would think like above poster said that the speakers in them were built for those enclosures and it will be hard to find the right replacements within your budget

I don't have this setup any more, had to sell it off when I went broke after 9/11. This was my setup in NY back in the day. All nice stuff, that if you can find second hand will do amazing things for decent $$.

            Marantz preamp
            Marantz dolby digital decoder
            Marantz cd/dvd changer (dual burr-brown)
            adcom power amps
adcom line conditioner / switching power supply (turned the amps off and on slowly and in order)
NHT 1.5's up front, zero's in back
            mirage center and sub

Joe, I've got a KICKASS pair of Sonance LCR cabinet speakers down at the shop that were supposed to go in at a job, and they were too deep for the cabinet. I can probably get you a steal price on them.

This is what they look like and some specs:

Joe, up on Sandy at about 86th is JaMac.

Go see Ron, make sure you tell him I sent you.

That is IF you actually LIKE the cabinets you have. Otherwise, CL or Goodwill. I have seen ADS, Klipsch, upper end Bose, nice old JBL, all kinds of good shit at the Lake Oswego goodwill.

I think if you want to maximize bang for your buck, it's hard to argue with used speakers, especially finding ones at Goodwill like Luke recommended.

Although there are standard speaker sizes, manufacturers often have different sized flanges (diameter, depth, etc.) so you probably won't be able to plop whatever drivers into whatever box you want.

And as Kencoppperwheat said, the bass driver is tuned for the box (at least, on quality speakers they are).

My amp right now is an older Harman Kardon AVR 20II...

                        I will check craigs religiously.

I like the cabinets I have, but obviously am not married to them. How much would I be looking at spending to put new components in them? If I can get a set of Klipsch's for less, I would rather do that...

Best bang for the buck would be... ?

I'm not familiar with ADS, but do know and like Klipsch and JBL. Havent had much experience with Bose.
I will be taking care of them this time, but I do want something that I can just CRANK once in a while. I have a hard time believing that the Bose can handle it?

Dude, Bose sucks ass in general...but not as bad as say...25 year old unknown speakers that rattle and buzz at 1/4 volume...

Find some old Missions, VERY old Polks, earlier 80's Infinity, Definitive tech.

post a pic of what you have.
