What do you do for your community?

This may be kind of weird posting at r3v where people have to save up to get a pair of euro grilles or something, but I think that there are enough established individuals to attain a response.

I am a firm believer that a person is a product of their environment. I think that I have a duty to go above the required taxes and do something good for the community that I live in. It may be insignificant, and might not make a difference, but I donate 5% of every dollar I earn to United Way. There is no reason for that besides the fact that my mother does the same. My mom worker her way through the retail system as a single parent of two and has established herself as an elite business woman in the state of washington. And she started out with nothing. Her motives to donate to United way are pretty much unknown to me, and I haven't really asked, so I chose to follow suit. For now at least.

So without the mushy story and all that bullshit, I choose to donate to my community. Does anyone else do the same? Doesn't have to be a charity or anything like that. You could be a YMCA doanter, you could buy uniforms for a little league team etc. And many people simply can't afford to donate money because they need it to feed themselves and pay utilities, so do you donate your time?

I ask this because I know I would be in a completely different situation if I had grown up in a struggling environment.

Is anyone else here a contributor, or am I just drunk rambling? Too mcuh of a mush topic for r3v?

And yeah, I've got the flare retardant suit on.

I don't usually donate to a charity, but I have thousands of hours into helping just about any e30 owner who asks me a question, or requests my assistance.

everything from engine swaps, head swaps after a thrown timing belt, complete car rebuilds, i've even driven 100's of miles away to randomly help people I barely knew.

    Thats my charity..

Whenever I see someone in need I try to pitch in
: help an old lady cross the road/carry groceries
: help anyone with car issues
: help anyone that seems to need a hand

      - i hate fucking beggars though.

I donate to Children's Hospital here in Knoxville, I do it because they saved my boy when he had issues during birth. I'm trying to do a 10% "tithe". I was a more religious person in the past, and still think that you should give 10% as it says in the bible, but I don't think that it has to be to a church. I generally disagree with how most churches are. No, I don't mean to start a religion discussion.

i am vice president of the City of Soleil soccer league in Haiti.
i was down in Haiti a few years ago to help build an orphanage for disabled kids who are abandoned by their parents because of disabilities. we scheduled a soccer game with the local kids and when they showed up to play none had shoes or even shorts. most played in their underwear and a few played naked.
when we got back to the states we solicited donations for soccer uniforms and shoes for these kids and ended up sending all this stuff down there for the kids. a few weeks later i got a plaque stating i had been made VP of the soccer league. pretty humurous but one more thing to add to blunt techs long list of ventures....i also help support a family down there. the money may go for crack as far as i know but at least im trying to do something. if you ever get a chance to go to haiti, dont. what a fucking shithole

When I add it all up, I give close to $15,000 a year to local charities. I also hand out the free cheese and bread and other food staples 4 times a year to welfare recipients.

I learned that I have to be careful as to which charities I deal with. I was surprised (even though I should not have been) that in most charities, less than 15% of the money is actually spent on the people who need it. I mean I don't expect the people who work there full time to work for free and I certainly don't want them to live like a pesant for the sake of helping others but I don't want the majority of my charity money used to finance the operations of the organization.

Yeah charities are generally crap. Take shit into your own hands - 1 person at a time. I'm with james - I help people who I come across that need it. The other day i spent 45 minutes changing some guys tire for him because he didn't know how to do it. I just hope it comes around one day when i need a hand.

I donate money to MUST Ministery. They organize donations and ration them out. the place works on a minimum bundget, with only two paid employees, both of which make like 35k. I think that is not nearly enough for the work they preform, as I have volunteered there several times.

The automotive industry if full of shady fucks that take advantage of people, so I help with that as much as I can. Just yesterday I came back from the cabin (rest and being lazy time) to install new brakes on a friend of a friend's car. I did not know the person from Henry the 8th.

I almost always stop for people on the interstate or side roads. Usually they say thanks I called someone, but some times I actually can help. Changed this lady's tire the other day. her and her daughter were going to wait 2 hours for her husband in the 100 degree GA heat, about 5 miles from anything.

When your gut says something listen. And definetly give more than you receive... if anything you wont have doubts that you owe anyone something!

I leave my keys at home when I go drinking.

Actually, I do some stuff for Mexicans who are trying to get into the U.S. to work, but that's a pretty unpopular cause with Bush's "Wall o' Security" he's putting in on the border. Sadly this has been made a screwed up issue in our country due to a lot of misinformation & scare tactics.

PM me if you want to know, I'm not about to go JScotty & blow my own horn.

Sidenote, I gotta get my NRA membership renewed - thanks for the reminder Ken.

It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.
