i am going to kill a credit card company employee

I've had this credit card for like 2 years. APR is 10.8%. I get my bill, and the APR is 33%. I immediately flip out. Call the company, and ask WTF this shit is about. He explains...

Last month I made a payment. I did it online, where I have 2 accounts saved. I put a check mark next to the wrong one. There was insufficient funds. Now, I got a notice saying this, so I promptly made another payment from the correct account. I got a $40 charge for the first account not working (that's acceptable). The second payment goes through, well before the payment deadline. All should be dandy.

But, he says this violated my agreement, therefore the APR increase. From 10.8% to 33%. He says they will monitor my account for 6 months, and if all payments are made on time, they will consider a decrease in APR. I asked what I can do to get it lowered sooner. He says nothing. I say let me speak to a supervisor. He says there is nothing anyone can do to lower it sooner. I started flipping the fuck out... I don't even remember what I was saying. He hangs up on me.

I call back, hoping to get this mother fucker so I can begin threatening him in the most illegal of ways. I get a nice lady, tell her what happened, and shes like "Oh, OK, we will change it back to 10.8% and that will be effective immediately".

    WTF

This guy is on my list.
(my list of people that pissed me the fuck off, but I likely won't do a damn thing about it)

Why the hell do you have a card at 10.8% anyways?

They gave me a nice high credit limit that I could put the entire cost of my school payments on, since my company does loan reimbursement only - no direct billing.

Thats a legitimate reason. Build your credit and get essentially free school. My company does tuition reimbursement too - maybe I should do the same. What do you do when you have to make monthly payments - pay the minimum? The only reason I have credit cards is I'll buy stuff on a new card - pay said card off - cut it up and throw it away.

I use it to make purchases for my car stuff and just pay it off at the end of the month. I don't spend more then I make and I don't hold a considerable balance. However, when they charged me that 33%, I had a new helmet, slicks, $1000 lawyer fee (family emergency), and some other little stuff on it, so that interest rate was a punch in the face.

I should do the 0% card cycle ordeal. Don't really have a reason not to.

Except that I've heard the credit companies are quite used to all that, and that it does somehow hurt your credit score, and if you are mainly doing all this to build a good rating you're essentially shooting yourself in the foot.

At least that was what I was told years ago, you might check that out and see if it's still valid or if it was ever correct. I'm on a roll with being wrong today, so I don't even barely believe myself.

It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.

that is my only credit history and my score is 750. The one thing you need to look out for is too much available credit. Also, as stupid as it sounds - a 0 balance can hurt - but not much. Just use credit every now and then and you will continue to build. I just financed a home - hopefully that will help.

Yeah. Plus my years of good standing, never missing or being late on a payment, pay off in situations like this I bet. I'm sure customers are rated in some way and employees are trained to keep the customers that they think will make the company money.

Or maybe they just treat all customers equally shitty.

I'm not doing it to earn good credit really, more so just because I like to have a low rate card for emergencies (10% isn't THAT high), school payments, and buying shit (easier then checks, and I keep the majority of my money in savings accounts anyway).

Basically the credit bureau ratings are much like consumer reports ratings but in reverse. Creditors make money off of the intrest and those who pay more in interest per year and pay consistently on time are more attractive to creditors. So there are ways to manipulate the system to where you can build your credit rating without being up to your neck in debt.

You will find that people with manic-depression disorders in combination with complusive disorders along with a well paying careers will have the highest credit ratings simply because they are compelled to buy stupid stuff for instant gratification and then they are paranoid about what their creditors might think so they pay their bills on time regardless of the intrest rate.
