    VW Gti

Not sure if there are any VW pros or VW enthusists on here but i got a question.

Does the MK 2 Gti Golf have the 16 valve motor or the 8 valve motor? or does it all depend on the model year?

Different sources say that the 16v was used and other that the 8v was used during the Mrk 2's production. so not sure.

    thanks in advance

It had both. 85 Golf II had 1.8l Higher compression engine
86 was the first year for the 16V and the then later in 90 they brought a GT onto the market it was basicly the older 1.8L GTi.

If you want model by model use www.vwvortex.com Oh there was also the not imported Golf Synchro and a Golf Rallye that was a 1.8 G-lader equipped.

Basicly a GT model, that was rebadged for sales purposes. But yes it was a Gti.

Oh forgot the Limited and Country giant offroad monsters. Funny things they are.

The years of production for the Mk2 was late 1983 (intro'd as a 1984 model) and the last year was 1992. From '84 until '89 or '90 the 16V motor was a 1.8L. The last couple years of the Mk2 saw the 16V motor grow to a 2.0L displacement and was good for 134bhp.....I believe the 1.8L wasn't too down on grunt when compared to its 2.0L cousin. The Mk2s also saw a couple of "facelifts" during its run - usually grill/headlamp style, body trim and bumper/valance treatments. Just Google some images of a given year, you'll see what I mean.

            Here's a shot of my personal favorite - a 1992 GTI 16V

VW is the ultimate in "Mr. Potatohead" cars - so if you are looking at one & there's something about the powertrain that doesn't blow you skirt up, you drop 4 bolts & change the powertrain.

Any motor from 1974 until the end of all A3 powertrain production (1997?) fit the other bodies, & most all trannys bolt to the other blocks & do so without any issue.

Like the other poster said www.vwvortex.com is the place to hang out. I barely caught on just as I sold my last, a Corrado. I really appreciate the fact that old BMW's don't break at the rate VW's do.

I had literally over a dozen total - Gti's, GLI's, a GT, & 3 A1 Sciroccos, and the VR6 'Rado. I still can rattle off motor codes, different part specs, etc.

PM me if you want the answer to most anything GTi, If I don't know it I'd be surprised.

It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.

But still referred to as GTi's none the less. Even the titles and sales receipts refer to them as 'Mk2 GTi 8v'

For the lay man they look the same until you pop the hood.

Besides, from what i understand, later model big bumper Mk2 GT's were 4 doors with sport seats.

Mk2 wasn't introduced until 84 in the US, sold as an 85. 84 was still a rabbit.

IIRC, the true Golf GT was a '86-87 only here - had the HT motor, and most of the GTi trim, but was also 1 of 2 ways to get the hi-comp HT in a 4 door, the other being buying a '86 8v GLI Jetta. Possibly with rear discs as '86 was the only year 8v to get rear discs. I even think you could get an automatic in a GT, but I can't remember if I ever saw one 1st hand.

There was a '92 VW GTi on eBay that was totally stunning, and had larger lips on RM's too. It was seriously perfect, I almost bid on the damn thing...
