too much, and it's stupid that every project that needs money in my state they try to raise gas, booze, and cigarette taxes. What's unfortunate is those taxes burden the poor more than anyone else, and half the projects are supposed to be for the poor.
They ought to work with what money they have, and stop promoting new projects when the bank is empty. Sorry we can't take care of everyone right now too much money has been wasted in needless bureaucracy for too many years.
The president (whom I'm not a fan) should just have a press conference and be the parent to a nation full of children. "Sorry, sounded like a good plan, but we can't afford it. Maybe next year."

To bad they can't figure out a way to decide medically if personal cigarette use was the cause of each person's cancer & other diseases - it they could do that & have people sign a waiver for medical care due to cigarettes, then they could make cigs dirt cheap I bet.
I don't smoke, but if I did now days it would stand to reason I didn't care enough about my health to worry about longevity of life - so if there was a waiver that got me cheap smokes but no medical care for directly related disease, I'd sign it.
Bush may not be "popular", but the world is a different place than what any previous president faced - maybe FDR, but not many others.
I know I'll cringe if we get a Dem president - at that point we will see domestic security crumble & I expect we will see more attacks on our soil. Not only that, but most Dems don't have the balls to go into Iran if we need to - and it pretty much looks like we do. I can't even say his name, but that shifty bastard leading Iran knows it's coming if we have a Rep in office again.
It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.

I find it laughable that we are willing to spend $200 billion every 3 months for the war in Iraq but Bush thinks it's 'irresponsible' to spend $35 billion to keep our kids healthy. That man is evil, I swear. While I realize that there is plenty of wasteful government spending out there, in a time of record deficits brought on by runnaway spending and huge tax cuts over 7 the last years, we shouldn't be increasing program spending without first finding funding for it.
Originally posted by atomic View PostAs a matter a fact some do !!! Why raise cig. taxes that will effect the lower income people to provide healthcare to their children who will benefit from it ? Whats the point in that? Charge them more on cigs so their children can have healthcare yeah the dems got that right didnt they.
smoking > our kids health

Cigarettes are up to 5 here in TN and the bible belt has the lowest prices...
Oh, and to boot, TN just passed a law that you cant smoke in public places like restaurants and bars now which follows nicely with half of every state in this country. So basically what they're saying is you can buy cigarettes for this hefty price, but you cant smoke them, and if you smoke them, you're shit out of luck and going to die and we're not going to help you. Oh yeah, you still cant smoke marijuana either. Have a nice day..

Yeah, the Dems definitely have it wrong on that one......
smoking > our kids health
I am a Bush supporter but do not agree with all of his policies too. Most importantly I am a republican and do not agree with any democrat beliefs or policies. I agree that studies have shown where higher cigarette prices will result in fewer people smoking them. But for those who are addicted it will be tough to just drop the habit because of the price per pack. The problem is that the Dems are not trying to get people to stop smoking for the health of the kids, but rather trying to do what they always do, and that is raise tax dollars to support a larger government. So instead of charging the lower income population higher taxes on a product, that most can not do without, and with the proceeds from this giving their children healthcare coverage. Why do they just quit giving themselves raises and instead take that money and give free healthcare coverage to these kids instead ? All this bill does is charge people more money to in return give them healthcare coverage which would be another additional agency to the federal government.

There are two types of studies to see if there is a relationship between two objects/phenomona: causation, correlation. What they can't do with cigarettes is create a causal relationship because there is now way to make an imperical study with stratified members of society with a control group.
in layman's terms:
No study has ever or will ever take two groups of non smokers and make half of them smoke for a lifetime.
now, on the other hand there is a correlation between smokers and heart disease (the biggest killer from tobacco).
As casaul smoker, i would sincerely like tobacco to go through the FDA and see if it should be allowed for public distribution.
About cigarette tax: it's basically there to slow down usage, but, being a product with inelastic demand, it's ineffective.
