    Chicago Marathon....

Hey, if you don't feel well, don't fucking push your body too far.

RIP to the person that died. But seriously, don't be an idiot. This was totally preventable.

I read about that earlier this evening - a really tragedy that could've been avoided. In that kind of situation, there's basically two simple rules to follow: good hydration and knowing your physical limitations. I know some may argue that one can get 'into a zone' of sorts when doing that sort of thing where your bodys' warning signs are overlooked or not even noticed. This can be the result of poor hydration - much like those kids on E at raves where they danced themselves to death. Their body would overheat due to lack of hydration and the body temp would rise to 105+. At that point, your brain will fry and so will you.

A police officer who was in training in the DC area also drank too much water, 3 gallons of it while running 12 miles.

I really dont get this.... I understand its hot for this time of year but it was 90 some degrees... its not like it was a summer heat wave of 100+? I mean they have marathons in the summer too and the runners are fine....

90 degrees is scorching for a marathon. Most runners would agree that high 50's and low 60's are ideal weather, so 90 is way too hot. And there aren't many marathons run during the summer in places that temperatures reach the 90's, and most are run earlier to avoid that kind of heat.

Well shit, I think the lesson that can be learned here is that running is simply too much of a health risk. Drink too little and die, drink too much and die, it's a catch 22!

(...kidding of course, I'm a runner)

From what I heard on the news, they actually ran out of water and cancelled the marathon due to the heat combined with the humidity. I am sure that there were people who still kept running regardless of it.

I had to repair a flat roof during the summer and its amazing how easy I could stay up there completely unaware that I was suffering from heat exhaustion. Once I was in the "zone" I felt like I could stay up there all day long.
