Washington State Car Enthusiasts, Approve Referendum 67

    Message from Jeff Butler,

This is an FYI to all car enthusiasts:

I know this topic is not the most fun topic on the board however, I believe this topic is very necessary to be informed on.

As the owner of a Collision Repair Center in Seattle that repairs many European, import and high performance vehicles, I deal with insurance claims and insurance adjusters on a daily basis.

Daily I see Insurance Companies wrongfully short change their policyholders by denying and/or underpaying legitimate claims, trying to pay for only substandard repairs and imitation parts forcing our customers to fight for the PRE LOSS condition repairs their insurance policies actually owe for. There is no easy solution to this problem as the costs of the unrecoverable legal fees to fight their insurer is almost always economically not viable.

This is just the tip of the ice berg in regards to how the insurance industry has had RECORD PROFITS in the last 3.5 years. 2006 brought a record $72 BILLION DOLLARS of NET PROFIT to the bottom line for insurers.

    ************************************************** ***********************************************
Referendum 67 gives policy holders the ability to hold their insurance company accountable for the policy they purchased.**************************************** ********** ***********************************************

R67 is a consumer friendly bill called The Insurance Fair Conduct Act that was signed in to law this year by the Governor. Before the ink was dry on the paper, insurance company lobbyists filed a referendum against this law before it was enacted.

Then, “consumers for lower insurance rates” (the reject R67 group that is really insurance companies in disguise) hired signature gatherers to hang out in shopping malls and gather signatures by saying, “sign here for lower insurance rates” enough signatures were collected to move this referendum on to the ballot this November.

Now, Insurers are spending more than 10 million dollars running commercials slandering The Insurance Fair Conduct Act and telling lies about how insurance rates are going to go up in our state due to law suits.

Even the insurance commissioner him self, Mike Kriedler supports R67 and is asking Washington voters to approve R67

    Approve Referendum 67
    This November!

On November 6th, Washington voters will be asked to vote on Referendum 67, an important consumer protection ballot measure that will ensure that the insurance industry treat consumers fairly.

We urge you to vote to APPROVE 67 this November – and to remind all your friends and family living in Washington to do the same. Here are the facts.

    What is Referendum 67?
Referendum 67 simply requires insurers to pay legitimate claims in a reasonable and timely manner. The measure would help to assure that the insurance industry treat all policyholders fairly and honestly by making it against the law for insurers to knowingly delay or deny claims unless they have a reasonable basis for suspecting a claim is fraudulent.

Why do we need Referendum 67?
Washington’s Office of the Insurance Commissioner receives thousands of complaints each year regarding insurance industry practices designed to reject legitimate claims including claims from homeowners, property owners, small business owners and automobile owners. There’s no penalty for insurance companies that do not pay legitimate claims in a reasonable amount of time.

Thousands of victims of Katrina still haven’t received insurance payments for home repairs. Referendum 67 will help ensure that insurance companies honor their commitment in the event of a natural disaster.

How does Referendum 67 help consumers?
Referendum 67 will require insurance companies to pay legitimate claims in a timely manner and hold them accountable if they do not. If voters Approve 67 in November, insurance companies will face penalties for unfairly treating consumers with valid claims.

People buy insurance, pay their premiums on time, and all they ask in return is that insurance companies honor their commitment to policyholders.

Please tell every Washington voter you know! Then remember to APPROVE 67 on this November’s ballot!

No insurance horror stories for me, exept when i got my 96 Firebird Formula. It was $275 every 6 months full coverage and now 3 years later it's around $400 every 6 months . I have a clean record. But i can't complain about the insurance for my Corvair, $46 full coverage every 6 months :D.

the solution to this is simple. rather than more red tape and beaureacracy, simply don't do business with crappy insurance companies (geico anyone?).

I got my insurance check pronto. the body shop, on the other hand....

gotta love how it's framed under the evil companies making a profit though. nevermind the whole purpose of insurance - spreading out risk (over time and over many people/businesses). if those companies didn't make a profit we'd all be screwed after a natural disaster..

Thanks for bringing this to the forefront. I need to read up on this myself, but I've seen a TV ad where some waitress is telling thinly veiled lies the insurance companies want you to buy.

Yeah, like the companies will EVER pass on savings in the form of lesser rates if they get cut a break on payouts. Even if they had a leg to stand on, I wouldn't buy that they would actually charge me less down the line.

I bet big industry even paid for the "deny" language, because John Q. Citizen who didn't read each bill will more than likely check the 'deny' box down the line, thinking it will keep the status quo.

        Thanks again.

It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.
