I'm a BMXer at heart. I raced alot when I was a kid. I still ride a little park when I get a chance. I've taken up mountain biking as well because it's awesome. The fixed gear idea sounds challenging so I'm looking forward to trying something different.

fixies are definitely challenging, we have one at my shop for runs to the hardware store and to pick up lunch, good times. i've been a mtb-er for years, and just bought a fit team last fall to replace my 26" dirt jumper (which is still for sale i might add) for park/street/jumping. just took the 20" dj-ing for the first time. flowy dirt jumping ftmfw! i'm also looking for a DH rig for Sol Vista and Winter Park riding.

I almost pulled the trigger on a haro zero the other day - but I wouldn't have anywhere to ride it.

Here's an odd question, can you be just too damn big for a fixie? My friend Brandon got one the other day, and he's like around 325-350 easy. His wheels keep going out of true, and he's having a bunch of issues with his cranks making noise, broke a spoke the other day, etc. Could he be just too big for the bike? Would his weight be causing problems?

Same here on the NBL national circuit. And got the damn idea to jump back into the expert level back in 1997 after taking 11 years off. Did well with it until in 2000 when I dislocated my left shoulder, when I realized that the 30y/o body doesn't bounce back from that shit as fast. I still go to some local races and try to catch some regional national events when I can.

My fat ass at 295lbs in HS, riding to school way back when went thru two bikes by bending rims, and wobbling the crankshaft and pedal shafts out of whack. Then I got my drivers license. Now its time to start riding again I guess.
That's what I'm thinking. With a frame as rigid as a track bike, all of his weight over even the smallest bumps would be getting transfered directly to the wheels, and to the pedals/cranks/bottom bracket.
Yes, too fat. Start with a mountain bike to lose the weight, and progress to a track bike. No offense. Sometimes I feel like I'm too heavy for my bike.
And I'm not into BMX sorry atomic. But I may go check it out when I get bored with jerking off on the weekend.

That was my worry. I knew he was too big for a track bike. I just don't want to tell him that.
if the wheels are built properly they should be fine.
something like a 32 hole Salsa Delgado rim, and a semi-high flange hub, and some 14/15 gauge spokes with brass nipples. if they are built correctly and tensioned to the proper level, they will hold up fine.
also, have him look into tandem wheels sets.
also, this person needs to 'know' how to ride. if you're 180 and and just bash the pedals and hit pot holes, then nothing has a chance.
Found this today in one of my neighbors trash heaps!! Not much, but might do as a single speed, or project, who cares, it has nothing wrong with it, just needs some wheels.
*Pardon the crappy cell phone camera pic, and my finger in the way, lol.*
