I need to get a bike for school next semester...any suggestions for a decent road bike/single speed, hopefully under $200 used? I too dont know a whole lot about bikes, so any pointers in the right direction help a lot. Btw, I'm about 5'10" 150ish.

      Cannondale CAAD 8, 9 or a Six13 in 60, 61 or possibly a 63

The Cannondale Six13 was the top race bike around 05 or so. It is a great bike...

Possibly more expensive but others to look for used - Cervelo Soloist or Specialized S Works E-5

I'd steer clear of a six/13 or anything made of carbon fiber for such a large size. Especially used carbon. Who knows how many times its been dropped, or had other minor incidents like that. The 6/13s suffer corrosion due to a lack of insulation between the aluminum lugs and the carbon tubes. (Any metal must have a layer of a neutral substance between it and a carbon tube otherwise you end up with electrolysis. Cannondale didn't do a very good job with this and that is why many of the clearcoated six/13s have clouding in the clear around all the lugs.) For a frame in a 61-63cm range, keep it all aluminum, especially for a heavier rider. (I'm a tick under 6-2 and about 195lbs and I used to brake frames on a regular basis when i was racing a lot.) If you were to give yourself a little more of a budget I'd look for a used ti frame, a lightspeed or something. It will be a little more forgiving, and last forever.

Steel is Real. Good Quality Steel is cheaper than ti and will also last forever. A good quality tubeset can be very light.

Yes, steel is cool, however in a 61-63 cm under a heavy rider, its going to be flexible. Ultralight steel is nice, but he's not going to find anything made of Reynolds 953, True Temper OX Platinum or Columbus for anywhere close to his budget. A Cannondale Caad 7,8,9, is his best bet since there were some nice ones with low end components that sold new for about $900. $700 should get him a nice used bike.

Worked on my budget bike today. Cleaned a ton of parts and made myself a single gear crankset haha.

Project Budget Bike is finally coming together. I've never refreshed a bike before but it's been really fun. Might have to consider flipping bikes down in college for fun and a little extra scratch.

A good quality steel frame is getting damn tough to find these days. Love my Pinarello Montello I had built for me way back when, it's a mix and match of Columbus SL and SLX.

It rides so smooth but lost some feel when I added a Alu fork.

Just today I finished the SS conversion on my Klein. Used the 38t front I had with the mid 90's LX cranks, KMC SS chain, some spring-type chain tensioner I picked up at a local bike store(good parts are hard to find and are expen$ive over here), and an 18t rear cog.

The chainring & tensioner are temporary till I get it fully sorted. Then i'm on the lookout for light(er)weight wheels, along with a few other components.

                              Pics on the way tomorrow.
