As the title asks, is anybody here make a living as a writer?

and by living i mean my parents pay for my school.
and by writing, i mean turning out a pile of shit paper at 2 AM the night before it's due

I'm a PR major...I write feature articles for the school paper from time to time. By no means a professional though.

It could be somewhat troublesome, but if you pursue a career as a writer, you better be pumping out some good work. Newspapers can pay up to $1.60 per word on quality work.

Would you say that you make a decent living? Is it hard to find work?

I'm transferring to a larger university next semester and realized that I have to pick a major. When I put my mind to it, I've always been able to write pretty well, so I'm looking into the field of technical writing. I'm not that interested in PR, though.

He makes a decent living, but he doesn't have a family to provide for. I don't know how much he makes, but he is comfortable, and gets lots of trips compensated for, and is often outfitted by whomever sponsors the trip.

Journalism does not pay well at all, but technical writing is a pretty decent paying field. However, the style of writing for technical writing, journalism and PR differs from traditional English. It's more focused on quick, simple, easy to read sentences then anything long and eloquent.

I'm content with what I'm making, but I'm also making around 1/6th of what I expect to make once I go on to do it full time after I graduate.

It doesn't hurt to just take a few courses to get a feel for things, to see if you like it.

There's always work available, its a matter of how hard you're looking. I deal a lot more with the Chinese/Taiwanese tech companies.
