i just bought a toshiba satellite for school 17 inch monitor I love it the only problem is battery life but that happens with vista. the normal battery only last about an hour and a half. have yet to try a high capacity though. Also it is on the heavy side but it is a POWER HORSE. Not in terms of video games (that is what my 360 is for) but in terms of video editing, photo editing, solid modeling stuff like that, i can do all that at the same time with no issues. This is my second Toshiba, had the first for 5 years, still no issues, but it just got too old. My Dad has had 3 Toshiba's and still has them all the first one is back from 1996 still runs fine.

All in all Toshiba's are amazing for a power horse. However they are a bit pricey. In my opinion though they are well worth it.

this is mine but i have an intel based it was on sale when i bought it.

I've always loved Sony's displays and never heard of anyone having problems w/ them untill I talked to one of my friends recently. He said that 3 of the ppl he lives w/ have had probs w/ their sony laptops.

From what I've heard and read, IBM's are very well built and last a long time.

And yeah I have heard that HP is getting better but I am still scared of them and compaq.
The standard Inspiron's are garbage. But then again they are $500. The XPS and the Latitude series are definately better but the XPS spends the money on features while the Latitude spends the money on build quality.

I have a Latitude D420 and had an IBM Thinkpad X-series. Best keyboards and build quality of any I have touched. Personally right now the Thinkpads are on top. At the time they hadnt refreshed the X-series so I got the Dell because it had features.

HP laptops can be good. Like the Dells you have to get the business class ones. If it starts with letters like d or v then its a consumer laptop and isnt going to be that good. Some of their designs and form factors are horrendous.

It depends on what you need out of a laptop. I have been using an inspiron for 2 years now, without a single problem. All I do is internet, and school-work.

I've had my Compaq Presario x1000 for almost 5 years and it has serviced me very well. I've taken it all over the country and it's help up to travel, the dorms, everything. I am going to replace it soon because, after 5 years, most computers at that age are getting pretty archaic.

I wonder if it is a bias from the initial poster or just ignorance, but it seems that a major player has been forgotten. What about Apple products? I have a 15" Powerbook as well as a 13" MacBook (Intel duoCore), bot as my work tools and they are great. The OSX platform is way more stable than anything else and whoever designed the many individual components of the computer talked to each others. So, everything works. And most Apple products come bundled with a lot of internal peripherics. No extra card to add... BlueTooth, Airport etc. It's all in there. Just pop the screen and you are ready to go...
Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

At work, I was given a Lenovo ThinkPad...its fast and has caused no problems for the last year.

At home, I have an HP Pavillion that I have had for 5 years now. It's still going strong. I haven't updated a thing on it so it is a little slow, but that can be fixed by adding some more RAM. I have enjoyed it so much that I bought my wife an HP tablet pc for christmas! Hope she likes it. If not, I will just have to divorce her! :DI probably shouldnt say that since today is our 5 year anniversary!

deff not ignorance. I DO NOT WANT AN APPLE. You pay a lot more for a weaker machine. I'm in school for business and everyone know about the PC/apple debate in business. LIke I said before, I am a firm believer that Mac is just a fashion statement. Don't turn this into a Mac/PC battle b/c I'm not going to get a Mac period....

Lenovo Thinkpad if you want to get work done

Anything else if you want a glorified toy

If Lenovo products can survive my sales team, they can survive a nuclear explosion.

Yeah, I just bought an HP DV6000, love it so far, fast and does everything good. My only complant is that it's a bit big and heavy for lugging around.
                              Best laptop for the money.
