I have a Dell Inspiron 1721 (17" widescreen, AMD Athlon X2 64, 2 GB ram), and I love it. I also just bought my wife an Acer Aspire 5100 (15.4" widescreen, AMD X2 Turion 64), and it's a great little lappy, too. One of the guys I work with has the same one, and he really likes it.

Dont compare the Dell XPS to the Thinkpad. You are better off comparing the Latitude since those are the ones with the metal chassis and business oriented features.

I voted for other since I haven't owned any of the brands you're considering. My previous laptop was a Toshiba which served me well for nearly four years before I doused the keyboard with a venti sized cup of coffee on the keyboard - which ruined it  This past June I replaced it with a HP laptop and have been very happy with it so far.

Thanks for the input. I was considering the XPS b/c I heard its quality was better than the other dell laptops. All the ppl I know w/ a dell laptop have pulled their hair out with mutliple problems.

I've always loved Sony's displays and never heard of anyone having problems w/ them untill I talked to one of my friends recently. He said that 3 of the ppl he lives w/ have had probs w/ their sony laptops.

From what I've heard and read, IBM's are very well built and last a long time.

And yeah I have heard that HP is getting better but I am still scared of them and compaq.

I've had my Dell for about 4 months now, no issues to speak realted to build quality, or any other aspect. My mom has an XPS that she's had for over a year, no issues either.

I would go for the thinkpad their machines are top notch and are far superior to any of the other systems you are talking about. My friend has a sony laptop and cant wait to get rid of it and I have always had issues with dell. If you are just looking for a computer to surf the net and do some work on I think the ThinkPad will be the best suited computer for you and not to mention they are durable and have really good customer service.
