      Downloading it now.

For those of you who downloaded this stuff and have no idea where to start, here is a PM that I sent so a guy over on bf.c when he asked where to start. The "guide" assumes that you already are familiar with The Wall and Dark Side.

The stuff in "the early years" is primarily stuff written by Syd Barrett who left the band in 1969(?). Syd was the master of writing a single. Things like "See Emily Play" and "Apples and Oranges" were very popular singles in England around 1967. I also put the soundtrack to the film "More" which was done entirely by th Floyd and if i recall correctly, without Syd. "The Nile Song" on this album is like no other Pink Floyd song. Its bordering on hard rock. I would recommend coming back to this stuff after you have thoroughly explored "The Golden Years"

"The Golden Years" are by far my favorite (minus The Wall. I'll touch on that later). Start here with Meddlle and more specifically, Echoes (last track on Meddle). "Fearless" is also a great song on that album. Next, I'd go on to Animals. "Dogs" and Pigs (Three Different Ones)" are both great compositions. The Lyrics are quite good on these tracks as well.

Next, move on to "Wish You Were Here" and listen to "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" parts 1-5 and 6-9. After that, give "Have a Cigar" a listen. I'll assume you are familiar with "Wish You Were Here" and "Welcome to the Machine"

At this point, you're familiar with their style and can start listening to some of the more obscure stuff off of "Atom Heart Mother" and "Obscured By Clouds." Skip the song "Atom Heart Mother Suite" for now. Go straight to "Fat Old Sun" Right now, this is probably my favorite composition by them. "If" and "Summer of 68" are not bad, but nothing too great either.

"Obscured By Clouds" doesn't have any standout tracks in my opinion but, all of them are very listenable. I would recommend listening to the album the whole way through. This was another soundtrack they did. It was for a French film titled "La Vallée"

Now, on to 'The Latter Years." Only one of these albums featured Roger Waters. "The Final Cut" is a rather depressing album that Waters wrote by himself (in the liner notes it actually says "Album written by Roger Waters and performed by Pink Floyd"). It has its good qualities but just like on The Wall, very little creativity from anyone other than Waters is noticeable. At this point he had complete creative control and the feud between him and Dave Gilmour would split the band apart.

After Waters left, the band put out their worst album ever (in my opinion at least) "A Momentary Lapse of Reason." "Learning to Fly" "On the Turning Away" and "Sorrow" are really the only songs worth listening to on this album.

The band's next effort "The Division Bell" is far better than Lapse of Reason but electronic drums and some cheesy 80s-style synth still permeates some tracks (but not nearly as bad as it was on A Momentary Lapse of Reason... Fitting title, isn't it?). Standouts here include "Marooned" "Poles Apart" and "High Hopes"

"Pulse" features mostly tracks from AMLoR and The Devision Bell on the first disc and on the second disc, the and does a great job of playing Dark Side in its entirety (along with some great encores).

So, there you have it. That should cover most of their commercially available stuff. I left a lot of it out, however so theres still plenty to explore there.

Now, on to the RoIOs. Keep in mind with these that the sound quality is significantly worse as most of these tracks are bootlegs or recovered from rotting tape.

The most significant RoIO is the 18 disc "A Tree Full of Secrets" This set contains mostly alternate versions of songs, unreleased material, and some various promotional stuff as well as small scores from television programs and other productions.

Aside from A Tree Full of Secrets, I'll just list some of the more significant RoIOs and the most listenable ones.

The BBC Archives have some very good live stuff with some of the best sound quality (it was taken from a soundboard)

Fat Old Gigs has relatively good sound quality and some very interesting arrangements of some of their earlier tracks.

Live at Pompeii is quite an interesting performance. The band decided to go to the ruins at Pompeii and play a concert in the center of an ampetheatre for nobody. The "concert" was made into a film by Adrian Maben and it contains interviews with the band members as well as some outstanding live versions of "Echoes", "One of These Days" and some others. If you are interested, let me know and I can upload the video version of this to the server.

"The Great Gig on the Moon" "The Dark Side Rehersals" and the "Dark Side of the Moon: Live Feb 17, 1972" all give an interesting insight into the evolution of Dark Side of the Moon. I would recommend listening to all of these performances.

The Last RoIO I will mention is the "Fireworks Show in the Canadian Walls" This is probably the most historic performance that is in this collection. It was after this that Waters got fed up with the lack of audience intimacy and went into isolation in Germany and wrote The Wall. During "Pigs on the Wing (Part 2)" you can hear waters spit on a fan in the front row and stop the song to yell at the unruly fans. Aside from this, some of the songs are really quite good.

Anyway, thats a brief description of what I have and what I recommend. Theres a lot here. Just take your time and enjoy. If at first you don't like something, just listen to another album and come back to it. Theres a good chance you will develop an appreciation for everything. Have fun. Its quite a journey.

I just listened to that recording parkerbink recommended and holy crap, it is absolutely awesome! I am adding it to the server now. If you know how to burn a disc image file to a DVD and you have access to a good sound system with Dolby Digital there is no excuse not to listen to this. It should be available for anyone to download in about an hour and a half. Enjoy it!

I've seen parts of the video from a compilation DVD that I have. Is there any way you could get that transfered to a digital format?
