Randy Couture says he'll exploit Brock Lesnar's wrestling background at UFC 91 fight
Nov 4, 2008 - 12:18:52 PM
Former WWE champions Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle made appearances on last night's Raw via the John Cena video series focusing on Cena's early career exploits on Smackdown.
Lesnar will be in one of the most-watched MMA fights potentially in UFC history next Saturday when he faces former UFC champion Randy Couture, who says he'll look to exploit Lesnar's wrestling background to win their fight.
"He's getting by with his wrestling background and it's my job to exploit those other areas where he's not as sharp as he should be yet," Couture told the U.K. Sun. "I'll have to force him into those areas. ... They're the areas that wrestlers tend to be weak at when they first start out in this sport. I think it'll go well."
Couture says he's looking forward to fighting Lesnar because he brings a lot of attention to the sport that otherwise wouldn't be there. He's not sure if Lesnar can be considered a top heavyweight yet, but it's a good challenge for him.
"Brock brings a lot of eyeballs to the show that maybe wouldn't have tuned in otherwise," Couture said. "Then there's me coming back to the UFC, which has created quite a stir as well, so those two things combined makes for a huge event."
He continued: "I don't know that Brock, at this stage of his development as a Mixed Martial Artist, is one of the best guys but he certainly brings a lot to the table. He's a big, strong guy who poses some interesting problems."
Lesnar speaks On facing Randy Couture , WWE and MMA
Brock Lesnar says: "There are guys I admire as athletes and Randy Couture is one of them. He's a legend in MMA and it is an honour to get to fight him so early in my career.
"It's a huge fight, the biggest fight of the year, period.
"But all I am thinking about is November 15 and ramming my size XXXXL gloves into his mouth.
"When I joined the UFC, Dana White told me I would be fighting the very best fighters in the world, that I would get no tomato cans.
"That's why I wanted in — I don't want to fight bums. I will leave that deal to other sports."
"You only have one shot at life and I don't want to have any regrets. I wanted to come into MMA right from college but there was no money in it back then.
"When the time came to leave college, WWE came to me with a bunch of money and I was a guy from a farming town so it wasn't too hard a decision to sign with them.
"But I didn't like it too much — the travelling was awful. I even bought a plane so travel was less time consuming and it was still too much.
"After the WWE I wanted to compete for real, so I tried out for the NFL. It didn’t quite work out but I don't regret anything.
"Why would I regret it? I would regret not trying it. But that's in the past, I am a MMA fighter now.
"This is my life and I live it for me, I don't give a damn what anyone else says or thinks."
The wrestling expert also revealed he could not be happier with his decision to make the transition into MMA.
He said: "It's the sport of the future. It's bigger than boxing in the USA and in the UK.
"There are no mismatches and fans get to see the best fights every single time they tune in."
Im just curious how that piece of shit even got a title bout. He lost to Mir, he wasnt very impressive over Herring. Even tonight he didnt look impressive Vs. Randy. He landed a few good shots, but didnt control the fight like a man 60 lbs heavier should. What a waste of space.
