As a dog lover and owner this post upsets me. Neither breed is "dangerous". And a vet will back that up. I know from experience. Our vet wrote a letter to our home owners insurance and called them out for their practices. We have since switched due to ignorance. Your statements about chewing and commands make you seem no better than those who wrongly label my dog and others on here.
Also you could have rescued a rott or a bull breed for 75 bucks. A rescue would have been as loyal or actually more loyal than a bred dog that you paid out the wazoo for.
As far as food goes, my 45lb am staff eats 40lbs every 5 weeks as well. I keep the bowl full, walk him twice a day, and he has never over eaten.
As far as "bite dogs" go (which is what you are describing) try moving to sacramento with a rot. you will have a ton of trouble. Rots carry the same "stigma" as bull breeds do.
In order to say Pitt Bull people need to educate themselves.

This is NOT a Pitt. Although everyone in my neighborhood seems to know better. As far as i am concerned, Am staff, and Bull terriers, american bulls, and boxers are breeds. Pitts are something un-educated people and dog owners use to describe every triangular faced dog.
Cute dog man reminds me of my old Amstaff we had to put down.
Here are a couple pics when she was younger.

And the current pup another Amstaff mix?

you took my post ALL wrong! i too am a dog lover. this is my second rotti. the first was my roommates, which he abandoned to spend time with his girlfriend and i later ended up inheriting.

i was merely trying to point out the things that most people don't take into account when getting a dog that has been branded by the ignorant public as a "dangerous breed". whether you like it or not this is the way most of the public see these dogs. insurance companies will sometimes refuse to insure you, landlords will refuse to rent to you. it sucks, but it happens.

i spent 8 MONTHS training and socializing my dog from the time i brought him home. that is 8 months of going to work and the gym only. every other waking moment was spent with the dog training and socializing him. no going out and partying. rotti's are an excellent breed, but they do not train themselves. you need to put your time in and get it done. you don't need to spend the same amount of time i did, but i wanted a higher level of training than the simple sit stay commands. he will not take food from anyone other than people in my household. why? i don't want some ass bag to throw food over my fence and poison him. it is not all that uncommon here, maybe not where you live. i taught him his commands in German for that reason, as well as i want to continue his training and get him schutzhund cert in obedience, not bite training. he is a German dog, he has a German name, and i speak German, why not? my friend taught her's in Italian because she spoke Italian, it helps with the dog's concentration when training.

getting a rescue dog is not a job for those who are not able to put in the extra time and effort. they usually have some sort of a problem, that is why they were given up most of the time. yes, they can be broken of their undesirable habits, they can be just as loyal as a new puppy there is no question about it and they can be excellent dogs. i have helped with the local rotti rescue group, i have seen people with great intentions rescue a rotti, then bring them back just because they didn't know what they were getting into. is this good for the dog to to be shuffled around....no! i chose to get a new papered pure breed rotti, on the recommendation of my vet and after doing a lot of research. it would BREAK MY HEART to have to put down my new companion because i couldn't afford to shell out $6k for hip replacements because of an irresponsible breeder breeding 2 dogs with genetic problems just to make a $. that is irresponsible, and by getting a reputable breeder, you could save some potential heart break down the road.

i merely pointed out than Bernhalds food consumption is 40lbs every 5 weeks. just more information for the potential owner. i walk him 4 miles a day everyday and take him to the dog park every other day unless it is raining (then the park closes to save the grass). i have never had a problem with bloat or overeating, his bowl stays full and he eat when he wants, and he is not fat.

in AZ there are WAY more pit bull attacks in the news than rotti attacks. in fact i can't remember when i have ever heard of one on the news. these attacks are for the most part the result of irresponsible owners not taking care of their dogs and training or confining them properly. dogs should look to their owner/"pack leader" for guidance not act on their own. that is where they can get into trouble. i am sure they are unfortunately rotti attacks too, but they don't seem to make the news, and the public forms their backwards opinions from the biased media who is looking for sensationalism and ratings. so YES in AZ pitt bulls carry a stronger "stigma". just because you have a pit or a rotti does not make you a bigger man or a bad ass, unfortunately too many people think that is the case. those people lead to breed specific legislation that screws us all.
i take great pleasure in walking my dog in the park as other dogs FREAK OUT when he walks by CALMLY, well behaved, and responding to commands. this almost always leads to people remarking on how well behaved he is and often they will strike up a conversation about rotti's and how they thought they were all bad dogs that bite everything. lead by example and you will change people's opinions.

sorry for the SUPER long post, but i need to clear things up.

Totally cool man, but you guys need to understand what "Pitt Bull" really means.
It isn't a breed. It is any bull breed. So saying Pitt Bull attacks are more likely is wrong. If there is a dog attack, than people automaticly think "pitt". Actually most of the time it is a totally different dog. My dog is not a pitt. In fact there are no such dogs in my opinion. Read the whole Wiki page I posted. It is good non biased info.
        Yours truly,

Get a Weimaraner, I say that only because we have three of them now...

But based on your original two choices, I'd go with the Rottweiler
